Health literacy is essential to making appropriate health decisions by understanding and interpreting their health information.  Promoting health literacy, especially among Black communities should be a key part of health equity strategies.  As part of developing interventions and tailoring health communication approaches, it should be addressed both by the health system and the community that can be culturally engaged.  It is ultimately necessary to address broader systemic barriers, develop supportive institutions, and formulate policies to eliminate systemic racism to achieve sustainable improvements in health literacy.  Health care systems play an important role in eliminating disparities in health literacy by considering the needs and preferences of the community.

COVID-19 may be primarily a respiratory illness, but its reach extends far beyond the lungs. Since the pandemic’s onset, it has become clear to neurologists that the pervasive disease can impact even our most precious organ—the brain. The neurologic and psychiatric complications of COVID-19 are incredibly diverse and sometimes persist long after patients recover from their initial infections. Studying the mechanisms behind how these complications arise is urgently needed for helping those struggling with lingering symptoms.  Many patients are desperate to get back to their normal lives, and it’s very frustrating for them that targeted therapies for their conditions are currently lacking.

40 Under 40: Episode 3 - Jessica Ehule on disparities in maternal and child health

In this episode, we speak with two licensed clinicians who specialize in maternal mental health for Black women, Tiffany Bishop and Whitney Coble, co-founders of Raising Resilience. We discuss the increasing reports of disparate maternal health outcomes for Black mothers and the resulting mental health challenges during pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum. We explore the unique challenges that Black women face in accessing mental health care and developing strategies to support their mental health. We also talk about cultural factors that affect the mental health of Black women during pregnancy and postpartum and how to ensure that mental health services are culturally sensitive and responsive to the needs of Black women. Finally, we discuss steps that can be taken to address the disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black women and how to improve outcomes for Black mothers and their children. Black Maternal Mental Health: Addressing the Unique Needs and Challenges

Current reports state that Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death for all Americans and the fourth leading cause of death for older Black people. Additionally, older Black people are two to three times more likely to have Alzheimer’s compared to Whites. Scientists do not yet fully understand what causes the disease.  There likely is not a single cause but rather several factors that can affect each person differently.  With evidence of this magnitude, investment to stop, prevent or cure Alzheimer’s must be accelerated.

Alzheimer's Awareness 9-2-23

Prostate cancer takes a harsher toll on Black men than other men, including other men of color. In fact, Black men are 50% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and twice as likely to die from the disease. There are many factors that can increase the risk and worsen the outcome of prostate cancer — not just being of African descent. Disparities in outcomes also can be affected by differences in when the cancer is diagnosed and how the men are treated after diagnosis.  Despite the increased risk of developing prostate cancer and dying from it, Black men are underrepresented in clinical trials that test new therapies.

When thinking about maternity care, usually pregnancy, labor and delivery are what come to mind.  The postpartum period, however, is equally as important.  The period after a baby’s arrival can be a busy and stressful time.  The weeks after birth represent a period of major adjustments and new beginnings.  Postpartum care is actually not emphasized enough.  In fact, only 58% of women go to their own postnatal visits, and only 28% of women bring their babies for a postnatal check-up.  Despite having new responsibilities, it is important to continue prioritizing mother’s and newborn’s health.

Postpartum Care 1-13-24

Trust is a key component in delivering quality and respectful care within health care systems. Trust in health care includes beliefs that providers and organizations have characteristics of honesty, competence, and good communication and that they maintain confidentiality.  Higher levels of trust in health care environments are associated with greater service utilization, improved provider-patient communication, and better health outcomes among patients.  However, a growing lack of confidence in health care, particularly among specific subgroups of the population in the United States, could further widen existing health disparities.  To achieve health equity, strategies to rebuild trust and reach diverse communities are needed.

Trusted Messengers in Communities 3-16-24

Risa M. Wolf MD and her colleagues at Johns Hopkins University hypothesized that autonomous artificial intelligence diabetic eye exams at the point of care would increase screening completion rates and would help close the access gap in under-resourced communities for young patients compared with the current standard of care. While the results confirm this hypothesis, in this podcast, Dr Wolf discusses why the differences between the two study groups were still surprising, future research on this topic, and more.

Stroke Awareness & Prevention 6-22-24

Some very alarming statistics reveal population-level disparities within our social and health-care systems.  One prominent example is the 30-year gap in life expectancy between people living in the poor, predominantly Black neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side, as compared to those in the more affluent, predominantly White neighborhoods.  This is the largest life expectancy gap in the United States, according to the City Health Dashboard and is attributable to few economic opportunities and high rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke in South Side neighborhoods.  The origins and ramifications of this wide difference in life expectancy are deeply systemically entrenched and must be acknowledged if we are to effectively close the gap.
