I'm a relative newbie when it comes to technical Linux stuff, and I'm stuck on this issue. How do I view .HEIC images? Both as thumbnails in the default file manager and as images in the default image viewer. Is it possible to view them in the default applications without having to switch neither file manager or image viewer?


Is there any "native way" to view the new 
HEIF/HEIC format
 (or the viewer-application) in El Capitan or Sierra without upgrade of MacOS itself? It is not yet possible to upgrade yet to HighSierra for me, but I'd like to natively view images from iPhone 8 and up generation, avoiding conversions to JPG.


There been questions asked about convertors of .heic to .jpg, but I don't think it's reasonable to convert images (via the means of online convertors, specialized apps, Dropbox, etc.). Soon or later .heic support will become normal, and all the online services and applications will finish the transition, so obviously there will be no need to convert to JPG.


Unable to view HEIC thumbnails until after they are opened and viewed in Photos app.
Viewer pane not working for HEIC files.
HEVC extensions are definitely installed.
How can I get the viewer to show my HEIC files and thumbnails?

For the HEIF Image Extensions, the Microsoft Store shows that "This Product is Installed" however the product does not show up in the Windows 10 Apps & features or in the the Programs & Features list. The viewer pane continues to show it needs the HEIF Image Extensions.





Finally Solved: I can now see .HEIC files in the Dopus viewer pane by installing the CopyTrans HEIC for Windows (free for personal use) and following the post-installation instructions.
However, a side-effect I am noticing is that my 
Windows File Manager
 no longer seems to show any previews (but since Dopus shows the previews this will be an issue for another day!)


I am running the rpm repo the shotwell. I wouldnt think the flathub version would run different formats to the rpm version but I could be wrong. I shall try to reach out to shotwell and find supported formats. I am just looking for a viewer and GIMP is more of an editor. I will try the flathub version as to your suggestion.


Like many things Apple, I do not find this to be actually true in practice outside the apple ecosystem. What I find is that some of the photos are .jpg and some are .heic and the live photos are .MOV videos when pulled from the device.


So the apple devices do not capture and store all their images in .heic / .heif when set to do so. But they do store some. I did not realize they were set this way even until I went pulling data copies when we started the phone changing process.


Anyways, I cannot view any of the images that I have pulled that are .heic extension with gthumb. Also same thing with image viewer/eye of gnome. It makes me think I am missing some support package maybe since I am still in 20.04 LTS


When reading a file from the input element by the FileReader api it works, but my android device also allows sending files and it seems to send heic files anyway which then results in an empty image without any errors in the console. Also the orientation is wrong when getting an image directly from the camera. I just found heavy librarys to implement and i am looking for a smarter solution.


First, in windows the assigned mime type for heic and heif is blank. Not sure when this bug will get fixed, but for now you can't rely on mime type in your scripts or input tag. I needed to add the heic and heif file extensions in the accept parameter of my input tag:
