"Phoenix Rising" was written to explore the nature and possibilities of the Helder Evo tenor recorder by Mollenhauer.  The Helder instruments, currently available in alto and tenor sizes, are recent designs from the 1990s, updated just a few years ago with the latest "Evo" models.  They are specifically designed for contemporary music and to balance better with other "modern" woodwinds, featuring a more consistent tone across an extended pitch range and greater sonic flexibility than recorders patterned closely after historical models.  This piece is an attempt to see what the first few months with the instrument might inspire!
