[00:00:00] Dorothy Fleming [DF] confirms name. Lived at Witchtree Road, Hempstead, in thatched cottage called ‘Howlands’, three bedrooms, kitchen, sitting room and buttery. No fridge. Ten children, four boys, four girls. DF born in 1924. Lighting was by paraffin and hurricane lamps. Open fire in kitchen for heat and cooking. Baked in sitting room. Father worked on the farm. Had to polish front room on Saturdays.

[00:05:00] Went to village shop on Saturday afternoon. Had halfpenny pocket money a week On winter evenings girls knitted, played games. Sisters joined Women’s Institute. Made lemon curd, aprons out of hessian. Youngest brother Bert helped make Christmas pudding and do sewing. Went to the village school at four and a half. Talks about houses she passed on the way to school, the shop; hadn't altered much. School building cold, although infants’ room had fire.

[00:10:00] Classes divided in big room, two fires at each end. Toilets outside with buckets, three four boys, three for girls. Playground divided into two. Played rounders, skipping, ball games. Friday mornings went to Sanford village hall for cookery lessons, by bus. Sometimes had to walk home. Aged around 11. Also did sewing, knitting at school. Took own ingredients for cookery. Also did history, geography, dictation, maths.Talks about her friend.

[00:15:00] Mentions exams. Remembers school holidays, six weeks. Wasn’t allowed to go into village. Went to farms and gleaning for corn for their chickens. Had two acres of ground with the cottage. Also kept turkeys for Christmas to sell and eggs for market. Went blackberrying for market. Apple trees, plums sold to Chivers for jam. Kept two pigs in the war. Had some play time. Had a shed.

[00:20:00] Boys then used shed for darts. Went to church on Sunday mornings and Sunday school in afternoons. Walks in evening. Had radio, no television. Remembers listening to news. Had measles, chickenpox, never needed a doctor. No doctor in the village; came in once a week. Aged 14 when she left school. First job as a maid lasted three days. Later worked in a house and looked after the dairy until family moved back to Devon. Next job from 18 until expecting first baby.

[00:25:00] Talks about working at the dairy. Making clotted cream. Remembers going to Saffron Walden, buying ankle socks for 6d. When older, bought stockings. Mother bought her a nice dress from Saffron Walden clothing club. Had a whist drive and dance in the village, band from Saffron Walden, Goddards. Mother helped with refreshments. Dress lasted until she grew out of it. Sisters had dance dresses. Bridesmaid to her sister, used that dress for dance dress. When she was working she went to Saffron Walden by bike; buses didn’t go at right times. Tells anecdote about seeing ‘Gone with the Wind’ and missing the bus; had to walk home.

[00:30:00] Reflects on whether her mother worried about the children. Had a policeman, he did at one time live in Rosedale. Always around on his bike. Remembers her mother doing household chores. Father and brothers did gardening, vegetables. Hardly bought anything except butter and sugar. Tin of baked beans a treat. Little tinned stuff. At Easter, always had a tin of loganberries for tea, with aunt Alice. Hempstead football match opposite their house in Witchtree Road on Easter Monday. Father charged people 1d to put bicycles in garden.

[00:00:00] Elsie Bacon [EB] confirms that she was born in 1919. Lived in Witchtree Cottage, now Howlands Cottage, on the Bumpstead side of Hempstead as a child. Had three bedrooms, kitchen, sitting room and pantry. Big rooms. Killed their own pigs, cured and hung hams in the chimney. Kept chickens, sold eggs. No fridge. Grew own fruit and vegetables in the garden, kept fruit in sheds. Did pickled eggs. House was thatched, plastered walls, brick floors and open fireplaces. Had copper in kitchen, made own bread.

[00:05:00] Passage between boys’ and girls’ rooms where they kept clothes. Four boys, four girls. Got water from the well, from fountain during a draught, from land ditch during winter. Used oil lamps. Sewage emptied once a week. Refuse was burnt. Dug holes to bury glass bottles on Good Friday. Monday was washday, Tuesday ironing. Weren’t allowed out until 12pm on Saturdays, after housework. All had own jobs. Boys helped in garden.

[00:10:00] Eldest brother, Jack, did a lot of gardening. Next eldest left school and worked at Lee’s sweet factory in Thaxted. Rode motorbike there. Jack also worked as a cowman. Bert worked at church army, Hempstead Hall. EB went to the village school. Talks about the houses passed on her way to school: parsonage, flint cottages, vicarage, thatched cottage where her aunt lived, The Firs, Bellropes, old post office. Mother born in cottage near The Chase, then moved as a baby to Witchtree. Father of her brother’s wife, Nancy Harding, owned the mill. Recalls that during the Second World War, part was made into house for evacuees, part as a shop. School building had infants, middle and top rooms, partitioned with curtains. Heated with a torch stove.

[00:15:00] Went to school with friend Nellie Halls. Took sandwiches for lunch. Talks about walking through pipes to Cook’s View. Went fishing. Remembers teachers Mrs Pilcher, Kathy Acker, and Winnie Foster. Good at maths but didn’t like school.

[00:20:00] Left school aged 14. Went to church three times on Sundays. Went gleaning for corn for chickens during holidays. Never went away; just to aunt’s. Never ill as a child. Mother had low blood pressure; had to help her a lot. Walked to Clare for a doctor. First job was at Field Farm, then at Saffron Walden, three days a week for 6/8. Then at worked at Warner’s for church army captain until she was called up for war work.

[00:25:00] Remembers her first dress, red satin with cape sleeves, short, to go to a whist drive and dance at the village hall. Aged 14. Didn’t have much spare time after starting work. Cycled to sister at Dry Drayton and sister near Braintree. Brother had a motorbike, then a Morris Minor; not many people had cars. Mother went shopping in Saffron Walden every October. Vicar ran a clothing club. Remembers the village wagon and later Wiffen’s bus.

[00:30:00] Mother had provisions delivered. Baked their own bread, also had a baker from Bumpstead. Talks about meetings at the school, heating. WI meetings once a month; most women in the village attended. EB only 16. Had cooking competitions, jam and cakes, buttons in matchboxes, picking wild flowers...

Interview with Elsie Bacon about Hempstead during the wars, 12 October 2004 (SA 87/1/2/1) 2

Part 1 of interview with Margaret Drane (nee Marsh). Margaret was born in Hempstead in 1935 and interviewed by Hazel Weedon in March 2006.

[1] Margaret Drane [MD] comments that she lived at Box Cottage; had box hedges. Once called Wheelwrights, as end nearest to Cracknell’s was a wheelwrights; later used for washing and as a pantry. Rumour of a ghost; somebody hung themselves there. Cottage was very comfortable but no mod cons. Coal fire in the lounge, no running water, outside toilet. Electricity put in when she was three by Sam Turner, who built the first radio in the village. Originally people went to the fountain for water; cold tap put in around same time as electricity. Cottage never had foundations.

[2] Had a lot of cupboards in corners. No fridge; had a meat safe. Grew their own vegetables. Two people came round selling vegetables. Always had lots of bread. Father born in Ashton, moved to Great Sanford as a teenager. Mother born in Great Sanford, one of seven girls and one boy. Father had a brother and two sisters. Married in Great Sanford Baptist Church. Father had worked on farm with his father, previously in bake house at Ashton. Mother had been a nanny in Gloucester and for an Eton house master. When MD's parents married, daughter of housemaster was bridesmaid. Father’s older sister married her mother’s brother. People didn’t travel far then, tended to marry within the area. No transport except pony and trap. Father was first person in the village to have a motor vehicle, a Morris van.

[3] Very simple driving test. Had driven a tractor before. Talks about father’s bake house and other buildings in the area. Also had a car. Needed vehicles because of mother’s arthritis. Either got petrol from Saffron Walden or little petrol station at Steeple Bumpstead, belonging to the Clark family. Learnt baking from his father, had a Master Baker certificate. Heated oven by furnace.

[4] MD helped her father. Could smell father’s bread baking whilst at school and he could hear children in school doing their tables. He also made cakes. Mother used her own oil stove at home to make sponge cakes. Aunt Evelyn took deliveries to Sanford and Hempstead. Also had a round in Radwinter until someone called Spittall took over during the Second World War. People came in to use the oven sometimes, often a chicken or goose at Christmas. Pears were put in hotpots.

[5] A lot of fruit trees around then. Supplies of flour from Clovers in Halstead and Hollands in Audley End. Other supplies from grocery in Saffron Walden. MD's mother taught her to read. Looked forward to starting school, aged four and a half. Remembers getting measles and chicken pox. Good at reading. Moved from infants’ to bigger room at six. Classroom had six year olds at one end and 14 year olds at the other. Only two classrooms. Five took 11 plus, four passed.

[6] Mother made Mrs Funston give her maths homework. Loved reading, had lots of books. No television then, had a radio. Main building in the village was the church. Went to chapel. Remembers the pub, shop and post office. Remembers another shop, now Draper’s, owned by Mrs Felgate. Forge was next to Forge House, where Anvil Rise is now. A lot of farmers had carthorses. John Hardy used to shoe the horses; had a fire that used bellows, also at Sam Turner’s workshop. Sam Turner’s father Sidney kept cows...

Part 2 of interview with Margaret Drane (nee Marsh). Margaret was born in Hempstead in 1935 and interviewed by Hazel Weedon in March 2006.

[1] Margaret Drane [MD] recalls having a smart taffeta dress whilst boarding at school in Bishop’s Stortford. People dressed smartly then, hats for church. Not allowed to wear makeup. Hid lipstick in pocket when going to the cinema, aged 15. Went a couple of times a week. Boarded from age 16. Two cinemas in Saffron Walden then. Told off by father for seeing ‘Fanny By Gaslight’. Left school aged 17. Looked after two boys at a guest house in Frinton then worked as a nursery nurse in Clacton and then Harlow; now Beckingham Palace. Then went to Great Ormond Street.

[2] Always wanted to work with children. Mother was a nanny. Attended a conference in London, saw Great Ormond Street Hospital, then applied to work there. Very hard work, looking after sick children on wards. Best way to learn.

[3] Talks about the wards and nursing staff. A cross chart system; had to do a procedure several times with supervision, then without. Started by giving injections, bathing a baby, giving bedpans. By third year, intravenous injections, assisting in theatres. Spent six months on the maternity ward and premature baby unit at Hammersmith Hospital. Did two sets of exams in third year; hospital finals in own hospital and general nursing RSCN at another hospital.

[4] Used surnames. Talks about matron, Miss Kirby; still in touch. 28 nurses started training, 24 finished and 21 were back for the 50 years reunion. Lasting friendships. Had fun. Learned structure and order. Talks about times of duties.

[5] Could get complimentary theatre tickets if finished at 5.30pm; saw nearly every show in London, including The Mousetrap in 1954. Lived in the nurses home for the first and second years. Could share a house after third year. Money was bad. Earned £5.00 a month when working at the Harlow nursery. Saved £3.00. Cycled around Harlow New Town on afternoons off. Kept in contact with parents by letter, or they would send money for her train fare home. Parents had telephone installed during second year at Great Ormond Street; had previously had to phone the post office to pass a message on. Recalls watching the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on TV in 1953.

[6] The nurses lounge at Great Ormond Street had one of the first colour televisions, for the children to watch the coronation. The furthest she travelled was to visit a cousin in Fife, by coach from Victoria Station. Once went with her father by the ‘Queen of Scots’ train, travelled home on ‘The Flying Scotsman’. A member of Radwinter Guides, remembers going to guide camp in Dorset. Camped in Norfolk and in the Lake District from boarding school guides and cadets. Didn’t go abroad until she was in her 40s. Most people left school and got jobs in Saffron Walden. Younger cousins and friend from Radwinter, Molly Walker, went to teacher training college. Courtships were going to the cinema, dances or socials together. Caused problems in the family by getting married on 21 December, near Christmas; chose as Hempstead didn't have a football match, Beautiful weather. Stayed for a weekend with a friend in Kent and saw ‘My Fair Lady’ at Drury Lane. Had later honeymoon in July in Jersey...

[00:00:00] Nellie Halls [NH] talks about getting married on Boxing Day. One bridesmaid, borrowed the dress, not very elaborate; in village hall. Had to make do. Not much to buy on coupons. No photos. Booked photographer at Saffron Walden, but he’d gone home. Colleague made the cake. Carried on working until her husband came out of the army. Wrote to her. Talks about farms and land girls. Remembers the coalman, the baker and the butcher, who came with a horse and truck from Saffron Walden. Got meat on Saturdays. Had two shops, shopped at the post office.

[00:05:00] Recalls wartime rations of butter and sugar, and ration cards. Comments that they were never really short of food. Mother made own cakes. Helped mother, a chapel cleaner, clean the storeroom. Mentions that where Pat Haylock lives was a dairy farm. NH took milk round to houses before school, sometimes in the evening; earned pocket money. Comments that everyone got on. Talks about a very strict school teacher, church. Comments that most girls went into domestic work but that some went to Engelman’s flower place at Saffron Walden.

[00:10:00] Talks about other people in the village, including one who moved to Ireland. Had a village policeman who lived in a boarded cottage at bottom of hill. Felt safe. Went gleaning in holidays, took sandwiches. Went to fields, made daisy chains. People left doors unlocked then. Mother was strict. Father older than mother.

Interview with Nellie Halls about Hempstead between the wars (SA 87/1/4/1)

BBC Essex feature on an exhibition about Dick Turpin at Epping Forest Conservation Centre, featuring Paul Moxey and Lucy Longhurst. Recorded December 1987 and broadcast January 1988. 

The feature includes a brief account of Turpin's life from his birth in Hempstead to his execution at York, and popular romanticised ideas of him through the work of the Victorian novelist, Harrison Ainsworth.
