The research interests of Wladimir Lyra revolve around the theory of planet formation and a very ancient question: How was planet Earth formed?

Lyra is an assistant professor at California State University at Northridge, Department of Physics and Astronomy. He is also a research associate at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a visitor at Caltech’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he received his Ph.D. in February 2009 from Uppsala University, Sweden. Lyra is a recipient of the Sagan Fellowship, the prestigious postdoctoral research grant named after the famous astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan.

As Lyra says via telephone in this podcast, virtually every society in recorded history, every culture known to anthropology, has attempted at some point to find the answer. In modern times, the quest has been stirred by the discovery of the roughly 2,000 planets around other stars known as extrasolar planets or exoplanets.

The vast majority of these exoplanets lie in planetary systems remarkably different from our own. But despite those dissimilarities, the same approach to research and the results it yields also apply to the origin of our planet. Thus, a major goal of Lyra’s research is to understand the diversity of the planetary systems while simultaneously tracing the origins of Earth.

The National Science Foundation’s eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is instrumental in Lyra’s research. XSEDE is a single virtual system that scientists can use to interactively share computing resources, data, and expertise. People around the world use these resources and services—things like supercomputers, collections of data and new tools—to improve our planet.

The Origins of Home (Planet Earth) with Astronomer Wladimir Lyra

A funny thing happened on the way to quantum computing: Unlike other major shifts in classic computing before it, it begins -- not ends -- with The Cloud. That's because quantum computers today are more like "physics experiments in a can" that most companies can't use yet -- unless you use software, not just as cloud infrastructure for accessing this computing power commercially but for also building the killer app on top of it. What will that killer app be? With quantum virtual machines and special languages for connecting and trading off classic and quantum computing, companies and developers may be able to help figure that out, not to mention get ahead of this next computing platform (before it surprises them).

Ok, sounds great. Only the old rules don't all apply: You have to fundamentally rethink algorithms for quantum computing, just as with previous waves of high-performance computing before it -- from CPU to GPU to TPU and now to QPU. Because as chips evolve, so do algorithms, and vice versa, in an iterative way. But the chicken-egg question of which came first (the algorithm or the specialized hardware for running it?) doesn't matter as much because the answer itself involves herding chickens: "You're trying to get all of these independent processes to run and cooperate with each other to produce an answer and do so in a way that was faster" than the other way before it, observes Jeff Cordova, interim head of software engineering at quantum computing startup Rigetti Computing. "In hindsight, we really care about the statistical model, not watching the entire movie", shares general partner Vijay Pande, based on his own experiences in the world of high-performance computing.

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) recently hosted a visioning workshop on Thermodynamic Computing in Honolulu, Hawaii in order to establish a community of like-minded visionaries; craft a statement of research needs; and summarize the current state of understanding within this new area of computing.

The premise behind thermodynamic computing is that striving for thermodynamic efficiency is not only highly desirable in hardware components, but may also be used as an embedded capability in the creation of algorithms. Can dissipated heat be used to trigger adaptation/restructuring of (parts of) the functioning hardware, thus allowing hardware to evolve increasingly efficient computing strategies? 

In this interview, two of the workshop organizers, Tom Conte (Georgia Tech) and Todd Hylton (UC San Diego) discuss their reasons for proposing the workshop and explain the potential impact thermodynamic computing could have on future technology.
