Luke 23 vividly recounts the final hours of Jesus' life, beginning with His trial before Pilate. Despite finding no fault in Jesus, Pilate yields to the crowd's and chief priests' demands for crucifixion. Pilate's attempts to release Jesus, including offering to punish Him and let Him go, are futile as the crowd insists on freeing Barabbas, a known criminal, instead. Jesus is therefore led away to be crucified. On the path to Golgotha, Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry His cross. As Jesus is crucified alongside two criminals, He prays, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." Soldiers mock Him, and a sign above reads, "This is the King of the Jews." One criminal mocks Jesus, while the other defends Him, asking to be remembered in His kingdom. Jesus assures him, "Today shalt thou be with me in paradise." Darkness engulfs the land, and the temple veil tears in two. Jesus cries out, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit," and dies. A centurion, witnessing these events, declares Jesus' innocence. Joseph of Arimathea, a council member who opposed Jesus' death, requests His body from Pilate. He wraps it in linen and places it in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had been laid.
