Wickend 75 - Best Of 2023 Vol.1 (Pop/Rock) (10-1-24)

Hace unos días tuvo lugar en Paises Bajos la última edición del Roadburn, festival de referencia en el mundo del metal y que en los últimos años, además de abrir la mano a artistas de otros estilos menos agresivos, está apostando fundamentalmente por bandas que aún están en el underground. Te contamos lo que sucedió en Tilburg durante los 4 días de festival, en un programa doble que estrenamos con la primera parte, centrada en los grupos que actuaron durante los dos primeros días del evento. Sonará material muy reciente, ya que muchas de estas bandas acudieron a la cita con disco nuevo o casi nuevo bajo el brazo, en este programa donde tendremos bandas de black metal de diferentes estilos, noise, sludge, post-hardcore, góticos y oscuras, pero también a artistas de varias vertientes del folk, además de rock e incluso algo de hip hop. FATHER'S LIBERATION OF A CONCENTRATION CAMP

I interviewed Sandra Durfee, as well as her husband, David Durfee, on October 28, 2017. Mrs. Durfee shared many memories about growing up in Manchester, Connecticut during the war. However, it was her description of her father's service during the Second World War that was perhaps the most vivid. 

Her father, Major Alfred Sundquist, left his medical practice in 1943 at the age of 35 to enlist in the Army Air Corps, serving as a paratrooper in Germany and France. During his service, Major Sundquist was also present at the liberation of a concentration camp, and was “in charge of feeding the prisoners who were left … who were still alive at that camp.”

Upon his return home, Major Sundquist did not talk much about his experience. However, when he came to live with Sandra at the age of 80, he showed her the pictures he had taken at the concentration camp. (After this point, he brought the pictures to the Holocaust Museum, and was interviewed by the museum about his experiences.) 

This clip represents the work of the StoryQuest Oral History Program, in that it preserves an emotional memory and moment, and provides a human perspective behind a historical event. However, it also demonstrates an occasional challenge of oral history interviews – listening to intensely emotional moments and handling emotional narrators.

Instances like this – where a narrator discusses intensely depressing or perhaps distressing memories – occur relatively often in our project, and raise an important ethical question: how far do we as interviewers probe into sensitive topics? What point is too far, how do we approach sensitive topics, how do we frame our questioning, and how do we respond when narrators get emotional when recounting their stories?

ANDREW DARLINGTON is a junior at Washington College and one of the head oral history interns for the StoryQuest Project, an oral history project dedicated to preserving the stories of those who lived through the Second World War with a particular focus on those on the American homefront. He has been involved in the project since the fall of 2015 and has spent the summers of 2016 and 2017 conducting and archiving interviews, as well documenting narrators' stories on the project's website (www.storyquestproject.com). 

In his free time, he has spent the past few years collecting World War II era artifacts, such as magazines and newspapers, in an attempt to further preserve items and memories from the time period.

In the summer of 2017, the interns of StoryQuest Oral History Program were particularly focusing on the women, Jewish, and African American home front experience during World War II. On June 20, I interviewed Jan Brandon, who had brought pictures of herself during the war. 

I tried to ask about the way women dressed at the time. However, the answer received was short and lacking specific descriptions. There was room to follow up with another question to delve deeper into the subject, but instead I simply moved on. 

My clip highlights the need to work on structured questions to get the desired responses, as well as being prepared with additional questions to elicit more details. This is especially important when one notices that an essential theme is emerging. The clip shows a teachable moment on how an interviewer might freeze and miss opportunities to continue further on a topic, and it opens the floor for ideas on how to avoid similar situations from occurring.  

MARIA BETANCUR is a history and French undergraduate at Washington College. She became involved with StoryQuest during the 2017 summer internship program, contributing to interviewing, audio editing, and transcribing. She continues to work as a community outreach intern for StoryQuest’s World War II national partnership program. Maria plans to pursue curatorial studies to inspire lifelong learning among museum visitors.
