The Hicks Variation

A simplified interpretation of Dan Hick´s song “I Scare Myself.”
I heard it on the radio and thought, “That sounds easy” (lol, it was not).

The song is a bit scary in itself.
Double-edged, much like the famous Sting song.
In one sense, it’s a 1970s-style love ballad — but in another, it’s a 2000s-era expression of control and ownership.

Actually the very first song I ever played on guitar. About 45 years ago, a friend at the ”Kringlan” youth center taught it to me — even before I had actually heard the original.

I met up with an old friend. — we hadn’t seen each other in about fifteen years. He had a song idea. The result was this grand, symphonic pop schlager about friendship.

Able to See (Kan Se)  — pop

Om det är (Second Fool)

A wobbly tune with a messy arrangement and a bunch of instruments. A bit of a stew made from old leftovers — but a fool’s got to do what a fool’s got to do.

It all started with a little guitar riff — one of those licks that just sticks in your muscle memory over the years. I recorded it and tried to build something around it, but couldn’t figure it out. So it ended up sitting around for some time under the name “The Fool” — a sort of prototype.

Then one day, inspiration struck, so I tried to reconstruct it again from the scraps. Spent way too much time fiddling with backwards-driving basslines and awkward drums, but this will have to do. Second try. Second Fool.
The Swedish title after a while became something else thoug.

I’d been tinkering a bit with an old friend.
It started as a bass experiment, but we couldn’t agree— and it went nowhere. It then became sleeping for a while, however, the fishing trawler association eventually later led to this Swedish West Coast pastiche.

Yeah, I know… there are tons of ambient tracks like this — but hey, here’s another one.

Dorian Grey

An attempt to establish a relationship with the Dorian mode.
After experimenting with some borrowed chords from here and there, 
I suspect it might’ve ended up more Mixolydian instead?

Mostly the same chord progression repeated throughout — no hook or chorus — but with a few tasteful key changes and a grand finale, I’d say it’s good enough for me.

Hurry up and take It Slow.
Well, of course it was originally meant to be something entirely different.
It got complicated, and never really found its legs.
Then, by chance, a new angle appeared — and from there, it didn’t take long to land on these harmonies. Nothing too complex, but it’s always a kind of journey before the pieces start to fit.

Modest, for sure — but I still find it rather pleasant.
