theory of everything

The idea for the lyrics came to me when watching a child sleeping peacefully in a trolley on a bus driving along the Länsiväylä highway in Espoo. The lyrics explore ideas of how our ancestors learnt to build fires, and perspectives  on the news where it looks like the human existence is gradually being set into flames. 

The chord progressions went through several iterations. Finally the riffs, the vocal melodies, and the chorus bass line just appeared. The attempt here is to create organic and non-electric music that sounds raw and live. The vision conjures a band, gathering in a dark forest, sitting around a campfire playing the instruments and performing the song, grooving and vibing fully acoustic while the fire crackles in their midst. 

I recorded and mixed this on GarageBand. I recorded the instruments in my living room with a Snowball USB microphone. I play the guitars, the bass, the percussions, and sing. The two guitar tracks, left and right,  were played on a classical guitar with Tomastik steel strings. The bass track was played on an acoustic Taylor mini bass. The percussions are a djembe, a tiny ankle tambourine, and a 10" splash cymbal played with hand and finger nails. I added some echo and reverb to the tracks, and some equalization, panning etc. but no effects. 

It took dozens and dozens of takes on all the tracks to put the song together and it still sounds sloppy, rough, off-key and off-beat every now and then. I ended up mixing it through a Marshall Stanmore bluetooth speaker. Enjoy if you can. Lyrics below.

Трек превращает простой бытовой момент в метафизическое откровение — кот становится безмолвным учителем, проводником из мира человеческой тревоги в измерение принятия и "неведомой ясности". Тихая духовная исповедь о поиске гармонии и желании сбежать от "хронического минора" человеческого существования в "странный мир" из меха и тепла.

🎹 ЗВУК: Медленный меланхоличный грув 70 BPM с воздушной акустической гитарой, обволакивающей каждое слово. Мягкие pad-текстуры создают атмосферу камерной интимности, как будто разговор происходит поздней ночью в полутёмной комнате. Тонкий kick drum и глубокий бас едва слышны — они поддерживают, но не вторгаются. Мужской вокал записан максимально близко к микрофону (close-mic'd), каждое дыхание слышно, создавая эффект личного присутствия. Эфирные фоновые вокалы парят в обильном reverb и delay, словно эхо из того самого "иного мира". Звук нарочито спальный, домашний, несовершенный — и в этом его сила.

I'll be frank, I do not know anything about making music. This is my first ever song, and it attempts to capture the feeling of Ephemerality with the passage of time.

I know more than anyone how flawed and imperfect it is, but I needed to get it out there as a testament of determination to myself, and to leap out of my comfort zone. 

It will serve the purpose of being a test case, to compare with once I actually learn more about music.

Like Victor Frankenstein I look upon this patchy creation as my own, and I wish to share that with the world.
