I listen to a great deal of music. In fact, I listen a great deal everyday. Since the pandemic began, I decided to listen to at least one full jazz album everyday until normal life resumes again. In this quest (which I am diligently keeping up with), I've come across and rediscovered a lot of great tunes that I keep coming back to. These are some of my "jazz treasure tracks." I've decided to share 21 of them with you. Enjoy!

Matt Greenbaum is a talented drummer based in the Seattle-Tacoma area, where the rhythm of the Pacific Northwest inspires his craft. Growing up immersed in music, Matt developed a deep connection to percussion, honing his skills and creating a unique drumming style that resonates with audiences. His journey has been shaped by the vibrant local music scene, as well as his dedication to exploring diverse genres and techniques.

Whether performing in intimate venues or larger stages, Matt’s drumming brings energy and precision to every performance. His passion for music and commitment to his art make him a standout figure in the Seattle-Tacoma drumming community.



For more than 30 years, Trevor Walker has been one of Canada’s best kept secrets. But talk to anyone who’s danced to his sets, booked him or shared the decks with him and the word legend is often use to praise his work. Collecting and playing music since 1988, he spent 21 years as a resident at Ottawa’s Mercury Lounge, one of the longest lasting and most respected venues in the country, playing alongside DJs such as : Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Gilles Peterson, Fred Everything, Quantic, King Britt, Dj Spinna, Osunlade, Roger Sanchez, Josh Wink, and the list goes on. He also shared the bill with bands such as : Jamiroquai, The Roots, Gil Scott-Heron, Maceo Parker, Alice Russell, Souljazz Orchestra, The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Bembe Segue, Galliano, and many more.
 
A walking musical encyclopedia, he’s responsible for shaping the eclectic sound that has defined Ottawa’s club scene for over two and a half decades, partly due to his various radio shows over the years on CKCU FM 93.1 such as : New Soul Collectve Saturdays [1990-2001], Flava Zone Sundays  [1991-1996], Undergrove Thursdays  [1992-1999] and his current Friday Drive [2005-present].  His radio shows and club nights have showcased a wide spectrum of genres, covering Soul, Funk, Afro, Jazz, Latin, Carribean, Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Acid Jazz as well as his trademark House and Techno sets. He’s particularly known for his use of 4 decks, layering hypnotic beats and adding acapellas over his inspired and informed selection.

On top of his long lasting residencies at Atomic and Mercury Lounge, he’s also graced the decks at many of the countries best clubs and festivals, including : Stereo, Piknik Electronik, Salon Daome, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Peopl, Di Salvio,Jai Bar, Squeeze, Black & Blue… [Montreal], Government, Solid Garage, OM Festival [Toronton], National Gallery of Canada, Ontario Art Gallery, Sashay, Sunday Sessions, SAW Gallery,Babylon, Club Zinc, Winterlude Festival [Ottawa]. Internationally, he’s played in Miami (WMC), NY, Amsterdam (ADE), France, Italy and Mexico City…
 
As a producer, he’s released on labels such as : Nordic Trax, Afro Art, Bombay, Fossil Fuel, GotSoul, and collaborated with artists such as Juno nominated Rise Ashen and Miguel Graca, Shawn Escoffery, Luke Mckeehan, Fred Everything, Souljazz Orchestra and The Soul Motivators.

Having recently ended his long lasting residency, Trevor Walker is ready to spread his wings and concentrating on studio projects and touring, taking his Lifeboogie brand to the next level.

The new GAZZARA album “Portrait In Acid Jazz” (Irma) – number 7 in their discography – showcases the band’s exemplary and instantly recognisable way of producing “jazz related music” that stimulate the body while pleasing the mind. The group may have slimmed down from the first album’s seven-piece, but the original trio still blows roofs off wherever they play, live or in the studio. Adding the invaluable help of guest vocalists Lily Latuheru and Yasemin Sannino the new material recreates the unique atmosphere of early acid jazz era, when jazz and funk flirted with soul, bossa, disco and electronica. Instrumental toe tappers such as “We Had A Ball” and “Jazid Wonderland” sit well between gospel-soul vocal numbers as “Heaven”, “Into the Night” and “Laces”. Even lounge/bossa and disco/funk are still relevant, according to tunes as “Jazz Is” and “Portuguese Soul”. A portrait in acid jazz doesn’t mean a collection of covers, but an original album conceived and released with a deep passion for anything jazz related, the sparkle that led GAZZARA’s studio and live work in the past 20 years…
