This week we continue our second series of immersive, atmospheric and contemplative musical journeys. You can listen back to the first & second parts of this series on my soundcload page. Look for show 159 on 8 June & show 160 on 15 June. 

For the final part of this three-part series we further explore the west coast of the good old USA, more stops in the British Isles, another hop across the ditch to say hi to our Kiwi buddies and popping into see various musical friends up and down the east coast of Aus. All the while enjoying a world of dreamy, jazzy and lo-fi indie pop & rock selections, ethereal and ambient soundscapes and psychy and folky flavourings. Should be a nice way to complete our musical journey over the last three weeks. It’s been great to have you along and look forward to hanging out over the next hour on the airwaves.

Latency marks its 10th anniversary with a special collection of commissioned works by HTRK, Damsel Elysium, and Tarawangsawelas. The three artists have crafted individual soundscapes that were showcased during the label night, held in the picturesque gardens of Villa Medici, Rome, on 26 June 2023. 

Originating from Melbourne, HTRK (pronounced ​“Hate Rock”) is a duo comprising Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang. With a discography spanning releases on labels like Ghostly, Boomkat, and their own imprint N&J Blueberries, Jonnine and Nigel have crafted a truly unique sound over the past decade. Their performances can be seen at a variety of venues like the Sydney Opera House and Rewire. 

London-based Damsel Elysium is a multifaceted artist who spans the realms of sound, visual art, and performance. Damsel utilises improvisational double bass, violin, piano and original field recordings to explore alternative connections with physical spaces and nature. They have collaborated with artists such as FKA Twigs, Celeste, Cktrl, Matt Maltese and the London Contemporary Orchestra. 

Tarawangsawelas is an Indonesian duo from Bandung. They are masters of the Tarawangsa, a traditional Sundanese instrument from West Java employed in ceremonies celebrating bountiful harvests. By combining the string instrument with a series of effect units, Tarawangsawelas conjure contemplative and hypnotic compositions while making traditional music accessible to a wider audience.

Après une émission consacrée au festival Levitation, nous recevons à nouveau Marion Gabbai, la programmatrice du festival The Echo. Ce nouveau festival marseillais célèbre les musiques curieuses et inventives, fusionnant le rock, l'électro, l'expérimental, le post-punk et le classique. Organisé par La Responsabilité des Rêves en partenariat avec Vedettes Booking et Limitrophe Production, il s'étend sur trois soirées, du 31 mai au 2 juin.

The Echo comble un vide dans la scène musicale marseillaise, offrant une plateforme tant aux artistes confirmés qu'aux découvertes. Il se déploie dans divers lieux du centre-ville, des salles de concerts à l'intimité des salles de théâtre, pour offrir une expérience immersive et variée aux festivaliers.

L'édition inaugurale promet une programmation soigneusement sélectionnée, mettant en avant des musiques curieuses et inventives. Le festival promet des moments mémorables et une exploration musicale passionnante pour tous les amateurs de musique.

<2 (two and under): Vol. 25

Bareback/Tensor, two sister tracks that simply could not exist without each other. Bareback being birthed from Tensor's chords, and Tensor being built from Bareback's drums. Opening this EP is Bareback [fullmx], a nocturnal instrumental that draws from bands like Everything But The Girl and HTRK. Smooth chords, deep bass, droning guitars and scattered hi hats, this is a song for the car ride home. Next up is Bareback [floormx], a dance floor ready, 909 fueled exercise in pairing the late night meditative nature of Bareback with punchy, entrancing rhythms. Tensor [050625mx] is a warehouse odyssey, beginning with a descending chord progression that falls into a storm of breakbeats, glitched vocals and guitar. While many versions are to come, this is where it stands. Closing this EP is Tensor [draftmx]. A 10 Minute meditation on the fundamental ideas for Tensor, ultimately ending where it all started.
