Heroic people of Gaza continue to resist murderous infamy

Rather than follow in the footsteps of his late father, a Nobel-prize winning writer, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa opted instead to serve humanity. Now the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ Representative to Syria, he just witnessed a historic end to 14 years of conflict and crisis.

“There were these long, long lines of cars of Syrian refugees coming back from Lebanon. So many of them stopped the car the moment that they entered Syria, they got out of the car, they kissed the ground … saying we are so happy to be back in this new Syria.”

The fall of the Assad regime has brought fresh hope for millions of displaced Syrians. Yet with a lack of housing, services and jobs still preventing most from returning, the UN is calling for action to support returnees. Hunger's Cry

Die humanitäre Situation in Gaza ist derzeit katastrophal. Fast alle Menschen leiden unter akutem Hunger, obwohl nur wenige Kilometer entfernt tausende Hilfstransporter bereitstehen, um Hilfe zu leisten. Doch der Zugang wird blockiert.

Ralf Südhof, Direktor des Center for Humanitarian Action, erläutert im Interview die dramatische Lage vor Ort und erklärt die Herausforderungen, mit denen Hilfsorganisationen konfrontiert sind. Er gibt Einblicke in die Arbeit von Organisationen wie Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch und dem Internationalen Roten Kreuz, die sich für die Einhaltung des humanitären Völkerrechts einsetzen.

Die thematische Vielfalt der August-Sendung ist groß, denn wir blicken in drei völlig unterschiedliche Regionen der Welt mit ganz unterschiedlichen Problemlagen.
Zunächst wollen wir nach Gaza schauen, wo sie die Situation für die Zivilbevölkerung in den letzten Monaten immer mehr zugespitzt hat. Anuk hat sich darüber mit Ralf Südhof vom Center for Humanitarian Action unterhalten.

Antonia hat sich mit den Protesten der jungen Generation Kenias beschäftigt. Die so genannte Gen Z ging zunächst gegen die ungerechte Steuerpolitik auf die Straßen, dann auch für einen ganz allgemeinen Politikwechsel in Kenia. Dabei wurde sie teilweise sehr brutal und auch mit Todesfällen von der Polizei bekämpft.

Und unser Kollege David Graaf sprach mit dem Journalisten Tobias Lambert im Rahmen dessen Freiburg Besuchs über sein Buch „Gescheiterte Utopie? Venezuela ein Jahrzehnt nach Hugo Chavez“.
