ON RECORD presented their creative response to Punk Culture artist Lucy McKenzie’s work with GRIME > PUNK –  a 1 day event that focused on how Grime is Punk for this new generation.

The event included a discussion on how GRIME developed as the biggest music culture movement since Punk and how it has had arguably a bigger influence. Participants included journalist Hyperfrank, artists Manga Saint Hilare & Koj, designer, artist and LJMU BA Fashion Programme leader, Andrew Ibi and DJ G33. The discussion was moderated by Dr Lennon Mhishi.

This year’s grime centered panel explored the defining moments of the genre with experts from every field. ‘Radio is the most important thing’ emerging MC Big Zuu shared on the Complex UK powered debate. He went on to explain that it’s where every MC should start. Chip has had a whirlwind of a year since he last spoke at Industry Takeover – from clashes to independent releases the established MC has been continuously achieving. When reminiscing about grime he shared what he felt was most important about its foundations – ‘Grime is about using the resources around you to make yourself heard.’ DJ Cheeky, co-founder of grimes biggest showcase event Eskimo Dance, spoke openly about the so-called ‘death’ of grime; “Grime didn't die, it went dormant. It was always in us." The ending topic left the packed out room with an interesting final thought ‘Is there a place for major labels in grime?’ all the speakers weren’t in doubt of the past events that have left to its rocky past and answered with a controversial “no!”
