I listen and watch a lot of podcasts and Youtube video’s about consciousness and the scientific, religious and philosophical take on it. I have ‘discovered’ a Brazilian scientist (computer science and he worked at CERN) and philosopher (Bernardo Kastrup) who resides in The Netherlands and he has a rather interesting take on consciousness. It goes to far to try and explain what his take is on this matter but there’s a word that he uses from time to time that got stuck in my head; qualia. Qualia is a term that is used in philosophy and qualia are defined as “instances of subjective, conscious experience”. To put it simple a qualia is something that is not measurable and arrives from subjective experience. For example the taste of an apple or the redness of an apple. You can define those things with a certain number of for example wavelengths but you cannot explain to others what the experience of the taste or redness of an apple is. All in all, this word is used in a lot of conversations with Bernardo Kastrup and I like the sound and meaning of the word. I was looking for a title for this song and during a walk the word qualia came to mind and I found it fitting for this song. In this song I have used the synth plugins Vital and Dexed. I made some samples with the Dexed plugin and used them in this song. There is not much to say about it except that I enjoy calmness and little tension of the sounds in this one. I hope you do to.

Midnight Motion is my first fully produced beat — no vocals, just pure feeling.
I made this using BandLab’s built-in synth Minor Portamento, which I hadn’t touched before, and it instantly gave me this gliding, nostalgic sound. The vibe feels like late-night thoughts drifting under city lights — soft, retro, and a little lonely.

A medium-slow 3/4 time folk-rock song of yearning regret - ostensibly about tomboy girl Jasmine, but with deeper meaning about the fading of the youthful hippy dream - the spirit of freedom, idealism and rebellion which reached a high point in the 1960s (and was re-echoed in the festival/traveller culture of the late 1980s). The song ends on a note of hope that the spirit lives on.

The Essence of Critical Theory

“May you vanish from the earth,
May your blood mean nothing, may your home have no worth.”
Cursing each other in the same cracked air,
Dreaming of a world where the other isn’t there.

But how can you erase what the dust has kissed?
Two peoples carved into the same sunrise mist.
To wish for your neighbor’s final fall
Is to set your own house on fire with them all.

Night patrol, an alleyway, a raid gone wrong,
Gunfire echoes, then it’s strangely gone.
In the rubble of a broken stall,
Someone’s dinner spills and rolls to all.

On one side, olives and a pita wrap,
On the other, hummus in a dented pan.
Falafel balls in a paper bag,
Still warm in the trembling hand of a man.

A soldier stoops to pick one up,
A fighter hesitates, then does the same.
For half a breath the war falls silent,
As both reach out for the same small grain.

He thinks,
“What is this? It tastes like home.”
He stares across at the stranger made of stone.
They’re chewing the same spice, the same fried bread,
While orders of hatred ring in their heads.

“What if we’re not so different, after all?
What if this border is just a wall?”
For one strange moment in the dust and smoke,
They taste the truth their leaders never spoke.

A week later in a shattered street,
An Israeli soldier sets his rifle at his feet.
Opposite him, a weary fighter stands,
Shaking, but with empty hands.

“I’m tired of hating while my stomach cries,”
He says in a voice that barely survives.
“Sit,” says the other, “just for a while—
I brought some falafel, it’s not much, but… share this mile.”

Word spreads quiet through the broken ranks,
Men slip forward from both angry flanks.
Commanders scream into radios and phones,
But hunger is louder than patriotic tones.

The captains rage, “Get back in line!
You’re drinking poison from the enemy’s wine!”
But helmets come off, and shoulders drop,
And one by one, the soldiers stop.

They pass the plates where the bullets flew,
Trading bread like something new.
If sharing food is treason here,
Then let this treason drown our fear.

Someone laughs, “This is dry as sand,
You cook like my uncle, with his shaking hands.”
Another grins, “My mother burns it worse,
But she swears it’s blessed, says it’s a curse.”

They talk of sisters, sons, and wives,
Of soccer games and ordinary lives.
“Back home we eat this after prayer,”
“Back home my father ran a little square.”

For a moment, tanks and flags grow thin,
As childhood kitchens flood back in.
The front line blurs, the slogans melt,
Replaced by simple things they’ve felt.

Falafel in their tired hands,
War dissolving like salt in sand.
“Tell me what you love, not what you’re told to hate,
Tell me what you miss beyond this gate.”

Laughter rises where the gunfire burned,
Names get traded, stories turned.
On this small patch of broken ground,
They find a language deeper than the battle sound.

Why do we bleed for colors on a map,
For ancient words we barely can unwrap?
If you can sit and share the bread I make,
Why must the morning bring another wake?

Bring your spices, I’ll bring mine,
Let’s trade recipes instead of battle lines.
If we can argue over whose sauce is best,
We might forget whose flag is “blessed.”

Call it naïve, call it blind,
Say I don’t “understand the times.”
Say “You don’t know politics,
You can’t fix this with a meal and a wish.”

Maybe so. Maybe I’m a fool.
But if every other plan just feeds the fuel,
Then somewhere between the grief and the gun,
A shared hot meal is where it’s begun.

Lay down the metal, just for a while,
Pick up a sandwich, offer a smile.
No treaties signed, no flags unfurled—
Just two hands trading bread in a broken world.

Falafel for falafel, palm to palm,
Spice over smoke, and oil over bomb.
If peace has a taste on this wounded ground,
It’s chickpeas, garlic—
and a life turned around.

Hello and welcome! I'm an independent composer, musician, music teacher and producer from Düsseldorf/Germany. I played guitar and/or keyboards in various (rock/prog/indie/fusion/whatever) bands for years. Now I spend most of my time hanging out in the studio, creating tracks for video and TV content. Trying to be versatile, mixing and matching all kinds of genres I like. And I still don't use gen AI for my music.

PETE GIOCONDA is a unique, edgy singer, a protest poet with penchant for historical reference. Pete Gioconda's songs are fused from new wave, pop and folk/rock influences, mingling poetic lyrics with a punk attitude and playful unpretentiousness. Youthful songs of mischief, desire, loss and sadness, plus transcendent perceptions.

Pete has taken the empty culture of materialism and is attempting to untangle it. His song “Hey You, Out with Shopping Bags” acquired new meaning in the wake of 2011 looting. Shadow shopping. The unseen forces which control our perception, which leave us “dreaming of money gods”, form the subject of “Wake Up or Be Captured”. “In one sense, 1970s punk had it easy,” Pete comments. “All it had to do was attack nice fluffy hippies. It’s much harder now, because mainstream youth culture is filled with aggressive patsies of consumerism. Being aggressive back doesn’t work. I’ve tried. It just makes minds smaller.”

“Some people make shopping mall music. Big, calm, blandly elegant. Somewhere to pass the time and feel comfortable. Pete does not make that kind of music. He makes the music of cobblestone streets, winding alleys, shady lanes. Dimly lit bars. The music of cold, still dawns. Of desolate, wild country.” - Nomenclature Standard

Pete’s poetic style is influenced by the freedom he found hitching and wandering in his 20s, and by his love of classic literature. His aim is to merge story, theatre and poetry with his music and songs. In 2008, Pete performed many Bristol-written songs live on BBC3 TV’s “Upstaged”, as guest of performance artist/musician Badgertrap.
