For a rising Turbo artist, your second release is what really makes you part of the family, culminating in a “Blood In, Blood Out” ritual held in Tiga’s basement rumpus room. “LFOs and Creatures,” Cora Novoa's second EP for the Canadian imprint, explores the terrifyingly fertile intersection between synthesizers and the unholy fiends of the nighttime world (but thankfully not Count Dracula, a deeply unhappy man).

The title track sees the Spanish techno producer and researcher harnessing previously undiscovered presets and tempos to expand the very limits of peak the as we currently understand it. Meanwhile, non-title tracks “Digital Identities” and “Self Control” push the boundaries even further, evoking a machine-only industrial warehouse rave where the conveyor belts, lathes, and double-arm extruders can finally let it all out on the dance floor. The EP closes with lead single “Oracle,” a piece of hypnotic ambient pop that will make you question whether we live in a simulation a full eight years after even Bank of America weighed in on the subject.

Now comes the uncomfortable part. Ideally, music should be free and for the most part it functionally is. But for the purposes of this discussion, we are compelled to remind you that this EP is for sale. Please try to think of it as less of a transaction and more as a symbolic gesture of the profound respect and gratitude you feel when you think about listening to our music. We keep on telling you that that’s the price of love.

In this episode, Professor Nasar Meer speaks with Professor David Theo Goldberg, author of Dread: Facing Futureless Futures and Professor of Anthropology at University of California, Irvine, where he holds faculty appointments also in comparative literature, and criminology, law and society. David is the author of numerous other books and studies including The Racial State (2002) and Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning (1993). His wider contribution to knowledge is simultaneously taken up in political theory, race and racism, ethics, critical theory, cultural studies, and increasingly, the digital humanities. Together with Dr Anjali Prabhu and Dr Aaron Winter, Nasar and David discuss the nature and implications of dread and analyze the politics of the world we inhabit today. Drawing on a published symposium in Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power, they delve into a conversation about the book’s politics of refusal and resistance and the social experience of dread.

Professor David Theo Goldberg
David Theo Goldberg is the Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute. Formerly Director and Professor of the School of Justice Studies, a law and social science program, at Arizona State University, he is the author of Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning (1993), Racial Subjects: Writing on Race in America (1997), Ethical Theory and Social Issues (1990/1995), The Racial State (2002), The Threat of Race (2009), and co-author of The Future of Thinking (2010). He edited Anatomy of Racism (1990), Multiculturalism: A Critical Reader (1995), and co-edited Race Critical Theories (2005), Rethinking Postcolonialism (2002), Companion on Gender Studies (2002) and Companion on Race and Ethnic Studies (2005). He was the founding co-editor of Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture.

Professor Nasar Meer
Nasar Meer is Professor of Social & Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow and Chair of the Academic Committee of The Stuart Hall Foundation. He is author of The Cruel Optimism of Racial Justice (2022) and co-editor of Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power.

Dr Anjali Prabhu
Anjali Prabhu is the Edward W. Said Professor of Comparative Literature at UCLA and the former director of the Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley college. She is the author of Hybridity: Limits, Transformations, Prospects (SUNY 2007) and Contemporary Cinema of African and the Diaspora (Wiley-Blackwell 2014). She is completing a manuscript on 18th-Century India and has published articles in postcolonial theory, Francophone studies, cinema studies and African studies. 

Dr Aaron Winter
Aaron Winter is Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Race and Anti-Racism and Director of the Centre for Alternatives to Social and Economic Inequalities (CASEI) at Lancaster University. He is co-editor of Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power and co-author, with Aurelien Mondon, of Reactionary Democracy: How Racism and the Populist Far Right Became Mainstream (Verso 2020).

I learned so much the first few years…Now, as I look towards the future, I can envision music for poor people, sonic odors for the hearing impaired, even MP3s for women....Vroom, sucka!” says Tiga, the lyrical lampsman lighting the way down Dance Avenue.
