Saxophonist Melissa Aldana can measure herself with tenor heroes of past and present, as first female winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Melissa Aldana is one of the promising young musicians of the new jazz generation: Downbeat listed her as one of the ’25 for the Future’. On her recent album Visions she connects her work to the legacy of Latina artists that have come before her, including Frida Kahlo. Like the legendary painter, Melissa Aldana has had to assert herself in a landscape dominated by men: at age 24 she won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, as the first woman and as the first South American musician.

Melissa Aldana grew up in a family of saxophone players: both her father Marcos and her grandfather Enrique were professional musicians. Ten years ago she moved from Chili to New York, where she collaborated with known saxophone players such as George Coleman and Greg Osby. Following the example of her idol Sonny Rollins, she led in a trio for years. Visions is a new chapter in her career.

Colorful mix of music by star bassist, known from, among others, Pat Metheny and Roy Hargrove. ‘An extremely capable player with a big, warm sound’ (Bass Player Magazine).

With his band Sound Effect, Ben Williams swings, funk and rocks through his original music, which he prefers to call ‘soul’, but which actually doesn’t fit any box whatsoever. The bassist from New York is part of a new generation of jazz musicians that writes its own rules. On his albums he can link African grooves to a Marvin Gaye feel, or cinematic harmonies to slamming go-go beats. He plays both double bass and electric bass guitar.

Ben Williams made his breakthrough after winning the Thelonious Monk Award and he was recognized as a Rising Star in the Downbeat Critics Polls. He played a star role on the Grammy-winning eponymous album of the Pat Metheny Unity Band featuring Antonio Sánchez and Chris Potter. He has played with jazz heroes such as Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, as well as with pop stars such as Chaka Khan and Pharrell Williams.

‘Like a handful of his fellow jazz musicians, including Robert Glasper and Kris Bowers, and those typically defined as hip-hop artists—Flying Lotus, Thundercat and Kendrick Lamar—Williams has covered vast stylistic ground as a player and writer’ (Downbeat).

The very first BIMHUIS composition assignment has been awarded to alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder. His new piece Paradís is inspired by the work of Marc Chagall and Messiaen.

The lyrical playing of alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder (1988), who was trained in New York, is compared to that of his teacher – and legend – Lee Konitz. Van Gelder is the leader of a quartet of musicians he met in New York. He also forms a duo with guitarist Reinier Baas and regularly collaborates with ICP drummer Han Bennink.
The thirty-something is also widely appreciated as a composer: for example, he wrote a composition in 2017 for the Jazz Gallery in New York: Among Verticals. The compositions that he wrote were arranged and performed by various large ensembles at home and abroad, including the Metropole Orchestra. His style of compositioning complements his playing seamlessly: lyrical and melancholic, with thoughtful structures and harmonies, sometimes abstract, sometimes narrative. For BIMHUIS more than enough reason to award Van Gelder the first composition assignment!

In addition to music, Van Gelder also studied art history. Images are an important source of inspiration for his work. His new composition is therefore based on a work of art by Chagall with the eponymous title Paradís. The painting depicts paradise in a completely unique way:
‘Chagall’s work is poetic, surreal and has its own vocabulary. As a spectator you are invited to enter his world. The idea of ​​paradise as a walled garden is something that really appeals to my imagination and expresses a basic and timeless idea. It represents the dividing line between order and chaos: that idea can be directly related to the writing process and improvisation in general, but in a broader sense to life, which can sometimes feel like a balancing act.’ said Van Gelder about Paradís.
