The group is a catapulting poster child for modern-day improv.  Although Niblock is new to Brooklyn’s 577 Records, Butcher and Sanders are not – and none of these talented musicians are strangers to each other.  Together, they serve a creativity-charged collection of unique instrumental voices co-piloting toward a common goal that unfolds before your very ears.  As they perform, the audience becomes a part of their creative ecosystem.  Their reactions and enthusiasm fuel the trio's innovation.
Tectonic Plates is a five-track paragon recorded live at The Black Box in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Each piece bears a name from the tectonic lexicon and sizzles with graceful unpredictability, much like our planet’s inherent movements.  The first, Mountains, rises from a valley of percussion to meet the tenor and bowed bass – a union made solid by shared pedal points and uplifted by the saxophone’s quirky sounds.  Distinctively, the double bass and percussion guide the intensity, culminating in a fundamental collective, like an orogenic event you can feel through the speakers.
“From a cognitive perspective, we hear the individual thoughts and feelings in the sonic process, which shape the narrative and further enhance the consistency during certain moments,” the group explains.  “There is nothing that doesn't fit musically in this trio performance.  These traits are a reflection of their mental intuitiveness on display.”

Korean voices and traditional instruments surface through the noise, blurred in a space between post-industrial textures, ambient fragility, and ritual percussion.
This set is a movement through forgotten landscapes, where sound becomes memory.

This project emphasizes live music, enriched by recorded voices and speeches that are seamlessly integrated into the compositions. These voices deepen the exploration of the themes chosen by the group, which, in this case, focus on Climate Change and the ongoing crisis in Palestine.

Reuben Lewis’s practice is both singular and eclectic. As an active performer, composer and bandleader, he has refined a unique electro-acoustic language, devised through trumpet with extended techniques and preparations alongside live analogue processing with pedals and amplifiers, that is as much at home in a beer-stained nightclub or contemporary theatre space as it is on a hilltop in Malaysia surrounded by dancers and bull-trance shamans. Reuben considers improvisation to be at the core of his artistic practice, both as a vehicle for meaningful collaboration that transcends stylistic or disciplinary boundaries as well as a fundamental philosophy behind making new work.

His latest album of composed work, titled ‘Abstract Playgrounds’, was released in 2018 through the Australian independent label, Earshift Music. The album features his psychedelic jazz collective I Hold the Lion’s Paw and has been described by Andy Hamilton in The Wire: Adventures in Modern Music as “a beguiling stew of afro-beat, jazz-rock-inflected postbop, and electro-acoustic noise – and on a deeper level, one of the richest, most insightful examinations of Miles Davis’s early 1970s work that I know.”

Reuben was nominated for a Freedman Jazz Fellowship in 2018 and 2019 and was a participant in The Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive in both 2015, 2016 and 2019 as well as the inaugural MAP Delhi residency in 2015 with the Tony Yap Dance Company. Over the course of 2019/2020, Reuben has been appointed to the role of Associate Artist, as part of the Australian Art Orchestra’s Pathfinders – Music Leadership Program.

577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission. 

577 Records started the New York Forward Festival in 2015 to mark the momentous occasion of Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday, now with festival editions happening in Morocco and Italy as well, and the international residency program Sounds of Freedom, in which active musicians are awarded the opportunity to develop their own sound, skills, and improvisation concept.
