O the boys of Letterfrack they are never coming back
They are buried in the shadow of the mountain.
And although they’ve placed black stones:
Sad markers for young bones,
There are others who were damaged, beyond counting.

What were your great crimes? Children of the lost,
That you suffered as you slaved for church and state,
They tortured you, and buried you, and never paid the cost —
Their paltry recompense has come too late.

Echoes from the Past is an innovative location triggered audio guide and walking tour of the Goldenbridge area of Inchicore, Dublin and is part of the two-year project Industrial Memories. Dr Emilie Pine, UCD, Tom Lane, musician composer and Maeve Casserly PhD candidate, UCD, talk  through the research and development behind this app and what you can expect to experience when used against the backdrop of the changing fabric of Goldenbridge neighbourhood over the last century.

This discussion explores some of the survivors’ statements, digital maps and historic 1907 Ordnance Survey that feature in this audio guide created by Maeve Casserly, Tom Lane and Mick O’Brien.


Maeve Casserly is a PhD candidate in University College Dublin researching history, memory and commemoration. She is also an Education Assistant in the National Library of Ireland and works with groups of all ages and interests to explore Irish history, culture and heritage. 

Dr Emilie Pine lectures in modern drama at University College Dublin. She has published widely on Irish theatre, culture and memory, including The Politics of Irish Memory: Performing Remembrance in Contemporary Irish Culture (2011). Emilie is Director of the Irish Memory Studies Network.

About the Project 
Echoes from the Past is part of the two-year project, Industrial Memories, led by Dr Emilie Pine at University College Dublin, analysing the findings of the 2009 Ryan Report. The project is funded by the Irish Research Council under New Horizons 2015. Echoes from the Past was created by historian Maeve Casserly, composer Tom Lane and designer Mick O’Brien. Echoes aims to give users some insight into children’s experience of the Irish Industrial school system. The guide is a verbatim project based on the 2009 Report of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (the Ryan Report). The starting point for the tour is the Drimnagh stop on the Luas Red Line. App Experience 
The 15 audio tracks and website are designed to give the user a sense of the common experiences of survivors of Goldenbridge using direct testimonial statements from the Ryan Report. Evocative passages from the report are brought to life by a multiplicity of voices describing the food, living conditions, education and memories of the school. Listen along as you hear echoes from the past – as the narrator explains the history of the Industrial School and survivors recall their memories. Overlaying modern digital maps with a historic 1907 25” Ordnance Survey map, it is possible to see how the area has changed in the last century and where the school fits into the fabric of the neighborhood. 

Project Background 
Originally founded as a rehabilitation service for female prisoners, the Goldenbridge site was converted to St Vincent’s industrial school for girls in 1883. The number of residents fluctuated over the decades reaching a peak of 193 in 1964. The school closed in 1983 and many of the buildings have since been demolished or re purposed.
