DC rock ensemble, Dear Daria, channels our collective pandemic-induced existential dread and musings on new EP, Solastalgia

Solastalgia is the six song follow-up to Dear Daria’s debut album, Can I Be Frank? Engineered and mixed by Mark Reiter at BIAS Studios in Northern Virginia, Solastalgia, will undoubtedly warrant repeat listens.

“Tino” and “Empire” are bonafide pop anthems that have been big crowd pleasers at the band’s live shows. The former describes the archetypal flakey friend who makes a lot of promises but rarely follows through, while the latter is an homage to the mid-90s cult classic, Empire Records. The EP’s other four tracks are more cerebral post-pandemic reflections. “On the Inside” explores how lockdown-induced depression made even the most simple and mundane of tasks feel daunting and impossible. “Avalanche” is a reaction to the skepticism of science and rejection of truth and fact that proliferated throughout the pandemic. “Cabin Fever” is a manic, frenzied study of what can happen to people when you keep them cooped up inside by themselves for too long, and “Making a Dying” is a somber, but hopeful closer that asks the listener a simple, but profound question: can we really call it “making a living” if we have to work until we die? And could there perhaps be a different path we could take?

Dear Daria is composed of DC music veterans Maryjo Mattea, Joshua Hunter, Eamonn Donnelly, and Dan ABH. The band writes storyteller songs about angst, love, mental health and depression, and a longing for the world to be the kind of safe and accepting place we all wished we lived in. The band’s spirit is informed by a post-modern mosaic of pop-culture references. Musically, Dear Daria is a brightly-colored swirl of power pop, indie rock, alt-rock, and pop punk.

Modern Mystery Blog called the band “the perfect purveyors of tuneful heart-on-sleeve alt-rock”, and KMS Reviews said, “You gotta love this retro-soaked handmade honesty…it’s a sound that you can dance, sing along, and get addicted to while learning a life lesson.” Guitarist Joshua Hunter discovered the term “solastalgia”, which combines the Latin words for “home” and “pain/suffering”. Philosopher Glenn Albrecht coined the term and defines it as "the homesickness you have when you are still at home" when your home environment is changing in ways you find distressing. “It feels like we accidentally made a concept album,” says Hunter, and “solastalgia” summed up its ethos perfectly.

- We judge angels because we live in what they tainted. A product of their rebellion. We're directly affected so make good witnesses in our Father's court. We are qualified. 
- If nephilim spirit is ejected, Holy Spirit must enter or 7X worse will enter. 
- Perfect love casts out fear. Spirit of fear based on imagination. Full acceptance of Father is agreeing with commandments loving God, neighbor and enemy. 
- Some believe in Christ, but not the spiritual influence. Hurting someone accidentally shows us evil spirits blind us. It's part of the process. We won't remember those that don't make it to Heaven. Obeying now in a weak form steels us for eternity. It's not what you say, it's how you walk. It's foolishness to try to lie to or deceive God. Lessons continue until final victory. 
- Doesn't matter if it's you someone hears of the Lord from. We want to be embraced by our families. Set yourself aside. Being believed doesn't validate us, as much as we want it. Don't expect others to see the strides of your faith. You do have a permanent family. Just pray for them.

Joe started this one with a piano instrumental he wrote initially some time ago and unearthed and revised on October 25, 2025. He described it like this:

“So I ran across a piano piece that needed fleshing out — I think it might be something. It’s called Hearth, or maybe Fall Ends. I’m deep in the autumn frame of mind, and it suggested a fire slowly dying with the frost creeping in. I had to use a different piano sound in the middle — not sure what I used originally.”

That set the tone. The piece immediately felt like late autumn — quiet, reflective, a little bit haunted by the chill of change.

When I took the inspiration for the lyric, I started from the word Hearth, but my mind wandered to Hearth and Home. The title felt familiar, almost comforting, yet the minor inflection in Joe’s music turned it away from any notion of simple warmth or nostalgia. It became something more complicated — a song about how we try to understand each other but rarely succeed.

The past week’s conversations with people crept into it too. It feels like everyone just wants to be understood and appreciated, but we’re all a little trapped inside our own heads. Words are blunt tools for delicate things. They don’t do us justice. So much gets lost in translation — and yet, we keep trying.

Hearth and Home sits in that fragile emotional space between intimacy and isolation — the quiet ache of realizing that even when we share our thoughts, we remain mysteries to one another.
