Synopsis:  Through the prophet Jeremiah, God addressed His people who had forsaken Him for idols.  Compared to the northern kingdom God, Judah was worse because they returned to Him in pretence, remaining fickle and faithless.  There was (and is!) healing and restoration for God's backsliding children who repent of sin and return to Jesus our LORD in truth.

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God clearly outlined His charges to His backsliding people and the way back to Him.  He called them to put away their abominations and return to Him, as unrelenting destruction was coming from the north on account of their sin.  Would they continue to believe lying prophets or have a change in heart to respond to God's word by faith in Him and evict sinful thoughts that lodged in their minds?

God sent Jeremiah to Jerusalem to see if he could find one man who did justly and sought the truth, but among the rich and poor there was not one found.  God would send Babylon from the north to prune foreign branches from the vine of Israel that were not his, yet the inhabitants of Jerusalem would not repent of sin, return and fear God.  All God's people ought to examine themselves and ensure our lives increasingly resemble our Saviour Jesus.

Israel resembled a person suffering from a spiritually fatal condition due to sin, and God plainly told His people their prognosis of destruction from the north.  Rather than standing, seeing and asking for the good old paths to walk in, they were determined to go their own way.  Are you someone who delights in God's word or see it as a reproach?
