We Just Watched... The Burbs

This week we're gawking at the weird freaks across the street, as we go from the urban hellscape of After Hours to Joe Dante's horror comedy about the monotonous terror of suburban living with 1989's The 'Burbs, directed by Dante, written by Dana Olsen, and starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman, Henry Gibson and Dick Miller. It's the start of another director series as we'll be celebrating the works of Joe Dante over the next three weeks, in a theme month we're calling Dante's In Fer November! Kicking it off with us is a man with a great mind for cinema, our most dedicated listener and a one-time radio jockey in his own right, Matt Pollock! Yes power listener Matty P is here to discuss a film very near and dear to him -- in fact his passion for it is what got J Mo to go scoop it up as a blind buy in the first place. ADHD-DVD - 35 - The 'Burbs (with Matt Pollock)

This week, we take a fantastic voyage inside Martin Short, as Dante's In Fer November continues with 1987's Innerspace, directed by Joe Dante and starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Fiona Lewis, Robert Picardo, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson and Dick Miller. It's a delightfully silly adventure movie that neither host had seen, as J Mo nabbed it on Blu-ray earlier this year based largely on the novelty of Short having a leading role in a big, broad action movie. And to be clear, he is outrageously good in this -- an odd glimpse into the leading man career he could have had that never really materialized for him. Plus: Hayley's mom is hooked on Tubi, and Justin takes a field trip to The Marvels as we try to assess the MCU's future, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and how Disney has flattened their own theatrical revenues across the board.

ADHD-DVD - 36 - Innerspace

We close out Dante's In Fer November with a movie that could not be better suited to Black Friday, an anti-capital, anti-consumerist screed with a sharp sense of humour that lands perfectly in that liminal space between Halloween and Christmas. It's 1984's Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus, and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Frances Lee McCain, Corey Feldman, Dick Miller, Judge Reinhold, Jonathan Banks, and featuring the voices of Howie Mandel and Frank Welker. Like Die Hard, it is perfect Christmas Eve alternative programming, but the movie is such a blast that you can watch it any time of year. It released in fact on June 8th, 1984 -- the very same day as Ghostbusters, as horror comedy was having a moment on that particular Friday. It's a J Mo favourite that Hayley had never seen, and was an easy nomination to be this month's entry into the podcast canon of classic films.

Si hay una palabra que, aunque manoseada, sigue despertando una gran emoción, esa es "amor". Sabemos como decían los Beatles, que es todo lo que necesitamos. No hay nada nuevo en ello. Los judíos en tiempos de Jesús también lo sabían, pero una cosa es la teoría y otra, la práctica.

El Manual de Instrucciones del Creador nos dice que es todo lo que nos hace falta: Amor. El problema es que creemos que son los otros, los que no lo tienen. El interprete de la ley de la Buena Noticia según Lucas, capítulo 10, juzga a Jesús con su pregunta (v. 25). Y él le contesta como tantas veces en el Evangelio, con otra pregunta: ¿Qué es lo que Dios pide de nosotros? (26). El religioso responde confiado que es el amor que él cree tener por Dios y sus vecinos (27). Conocedor de su deseo de justificarse a sí mismo (28), Jesús aprueba su teoría, pero le muestra que suspende en la práctica con la historia que conocemos como la del "buen samaritano" (30-35), una expresión que sería una contradicción en términos para los judíos en tiempos de Jesús. Ya que como los indios de las películas del Oeste, el único bueno para ellos, era el que esté muerto. 

La cantautora de música de raíces americanas, Iris De Ment no se identifica como cristiana o religiosa, pero tiene una relación de amor y odio con su educación pentecostal. Por un lado, le gustaba ir a la iglesia y la música que allí se cantaba, pero aborrecía la separación que hace esa fe del mundo. En su canción "El descendió" (He Reached Down 2004) repite la historia que cuenta Jesús en este pasaje. Lo mismo hace Keith Green en el tema que rememora lo ocurrido "En el camino a Jericó" (On The Road To Jericho), aparecido en el álbum que publicó su viuda en 1984, tras su temprana muerte en un accidente de avioneta. La parábola de Jesús es una respuesta a la pregunta de quién es tu vecino (v. 29). que es lo que significa "prójimo". El que fuera cantante de los Kinks, Ray Davies, nos describe en 2006 quién es el vecino de la puerta de al lado (Next Door Neighbour), que no es lo que aparenta.

Lo que llaman los americanos "los suburbios" son esas zonas residenciales en las que sueña vivir toda familia de clase media, lejos del ruido y la inseguridad de los descuidados centros de las grandes ciudades. La película que conocemos en España como "No matarás... al vecino" y en Hispanoamérica como "SOS, vecinos al ataque", tiene el titulo original de la forma popular de llamar a "los suburbios (The Burbs 1989). En ellos sitúa Joe Dante a un joven Tom Hanks, casado con la antigua princesa Leia de Star Wars, Carrie Fisher, ante la sospecha de tantos estadounidenses a finales de los 80 de que sus vecinos podrían ser de una secta satánica. El llamado "pánico satánico" pretendía que había doce mil casos de abusos rituales satánicos en muchas ciudades y pueblos norteamericanos. La película de Joe Dante muestra cómo nuestros miedos pueden llevarnos a cometer grandes errores, aunque haya sorpresas como la que nos depara el final de esta historia. José de Segovia no la destripa, pero comenta la situación a la luz de la historia del Evangelio con el fondo de la banda sonora original de Jerry Goldsmith. 

The Cribs es una banda de rock de garaje británica a la que se unió el guitarrista de los Smiths, Johnny Marr, a principios de este siglo. Como la parábola de Jesús, nos recuerdan que "compartimos un mismo cielo" (We Share The Same Skies 2009). Tu prójimo no es el que piensa como tú y consideras como uno de los tuyos. Es todo el que pasa a tu lado. El buen samaritano es el título también de la canción del grupo de "reggae" cristiano Christafari, que en 2021 recuerda la historia de Jesús para mostrar la diferencia que hace la verdadera fe frente a todo sectarismo y prejuicio racial o social. El verdadero amor es generoso.

She, quite bravely, attempts to entrap her stalker in the back of a porn store where police barely arrive in time to save her. She’s traumatized into amnesia and this dude is in her dreams, day and night, so her psychiatrist decides to send her and her husband to a retreat with a lot of folksy music. Ok, so it’s inhabited by a commune of werewolf swingers. Sure, they don’t say or show too much swinger stuff but you can tell what’s going on here. It’s kind of a sexy movie. That one lady is in heat. We’re talking Joe Dante’s reverential werewolf horror from 1981, “THE HOWLING” also starring Patrick Macnee, Christopher Stone & Slim Pickens. Yes, Slim Pickens. Imagine him in a werewolf orgy. Maybe he wanted to throw himself on that fire because he couldn’t participate in the werewolf orgy anymore? Happens to the best of us. Sure, they call it “THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR” but a lot of bad things can happen around the holidays and it can be very hard on folks. Today we hit up a worthy modern Christmas classic that was very formidable to our youth and introduced to us two absolute smokeshows that would influence our growth into maturity. We’re talking about Gizmo and Phoebe Cates. We hit up Joe Dante last Halloween season so let us discuss his iconic 1984 Christmas horror-comedy “GREMLINS” starring Zach Gilligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton. Mogwai’s are extremely cute (don’t look up what that word means in Cantonese) but they come with very strict rules that seem inevitable to be broken. Wet em and they multiply. Feed them after midnight Eastern U.S. standard time and they will transform into these little green maniacs that are annoying, sometimes deadly but often very funny. They’re a very funny plague but could also destroy entire civilizations. Seriously, why aren’t we culling these Mogwai dudes? I know they’re cute as hell but the risks are too great. They do like movies though. That’s a big plus with these guys. If only we could get one on the show.
