PREMIERE: JR2k — Negative Space (Original Mix) [Fixed Rhythms]

There were shadows everywhere, they lurked around corners and beneath the streetlights. Their wicked faces were blurry and dark, much like the minds which sat behind their pale shadowy eyes. There was nothing but negative space back there, buried deep in the recesses of their twisted skulls.

The night was chilly and cold, the sound of industry could be heard roaring in the distance. They were building and preparing for what was to come, for it could be any day now.

Smoke filled the air, it was thick and coarse upon the lungs. One deep breath might be all it took to send you into the great beyond.

JR2k aka Jackson Ryland releases a new EP of riotous Techno on Fixed Rhythms. Furious and fast paced with a frenetic energy and poise.

Floorspeed brings it home to DC with its first release in 2025 from local techno standout producers, James Bangura & JR2k (Jackson Ryland). Many know Bangura from his contributions to the Black Rave Culture crew and his numerous solo releases; others have heard of Ryland under the Rush Plus and Superabundance alias duos and as label boss of Floorspeed…all those credentials culminate in a superb piece of heavy techno for FSPD002.

First up - two turbo mode collab tracks. A1’s “Time Crisis” captures a latent sense of urgency and pressure felt in everyday life with subtly intensifying builds throughout the track. This one’s ready for peak time exposure. “Pump Fake” continues with integrated elements of surprise, switching up at key moments to accelerate any dancefloor on a dime.

Flipping the record to B1, JR2k goes solo with “Machine Learning,” a gritty, industrial-tinged track that incorporates techno’s future-facing elements with a touch of raw power. A relentless pulse guides the track through its vast, mechanical atmosphere, designed for the late-night hours. Rain Heavy on B2 closes the EP with a hypnotic, atmospheric vibe for an absolute hands-in-the-air finish.

Full-bore, dub wise and hard grooving techno welters by DC-based Jackson Ryland in JR2K mode for Cape St. Francis, chasing their drops by 2Lanes, Jezz marquis and Mills Boogie

One for peak time, ’The Express Lane’ fires four of Ryland’s most direct club bullets. ‘On The Run’ gets into gear with a proper Rob Hood-style body rattler, all flying 909 hi-hats and chattering dub chords, next to the lithe canter and pulse-quickening arps of ‘Life Goes On’. His command of classic US techno pressure is in full effect on a brisk and whipsmart ‘Stretchy Material’ comparable to Joey Beltram steamers, and the vinyl-only ‘Into It’ gives the hard groove tribe some filtered finesse for hot-knobbing action.
