Welcome again to the juke-joint of my mind.  This is an improv based on a theme that I've been playing for a bit.  It is impromptu and my ideas sometimes exceed my chops; accordingly, as rough and spontaneous as a juke-joint Saturday night.

One of my all times piano favs is a Chicago blues immortal - Jimmy Yancey.  Godfather of the boogie-woogie form, although generally slower and "melodic" - at least to me.  Additionally, he had the sweetest, most-tender, knowing eyes this side of Albert Einstein.  As the piece developed I realized this was a tribute to Yancey - no way I could copy him -even if I wanted to - but his presence presided over the recording.

It's Me, It's Not You

Ever stepped into a room where the music didn’t just play, it moved through the room… and through everybody?  If you’ve seen Sinners by Ryan Coogler, you’ll remember that juke joint scene where everything flowed in perfect synergy. The music bent across eras and genres. Sound, spirit, community, and liberation all came together. That kind of collective freedom lives in this track.  This piece, "Unhainted," is about ancestral memory, spiritual defense, and release through sound. It is Part II of my track "Haint," from my first instrumental beat tape 12323 After seeing how Sinners depicted haints, I felt called to revisit and evolve the vision I began with "Haint."  In Gullah Geechee tradition, haints are restless spirits, but they can also be people. The kind who carry a certain kind of disturbance. Not always seen, but always felt. Confusing the atmosphere, draining the energy. "Unhainted" carries the concept of my original track “Haint” forward into cleansing and clarity. It’s rooted in the tradition of keeping our spirits clean and our spaces clear from haints, bad energy, and anything that moves against our alignment.  Released on 052525. A numeric palindrome. A mirror. A signal. That date speaks its own protection. And if you noticed, it echoes the rhythm of my first tape, 12323. Frequencies and patterns matter.  Thanks for the read. Rebel's Lament

This is one of those songs that walks a few different paths and paves a few of its own. It doesn't fit squarely into any one genre but when I hear it, I think it's one of those songs you might hear in a movie while the main characters get into a similar situation as the one explained in the song. It's catchy though. Don't blame me when you can't stop humming it.

Somebody Else's Girl

The Music of Sound...really!!  It's all grist for the mill.  I visualize Sound/Music as colors, shapes and forms rather than notes in a scale.  I look upon each of these pieces as individual environments and/or sculptures in which to spend some time, looking round, feeling the curves, hanging out, exploring... Each composition is based on different elements, structures and rules or lack thereof.  Consequently, each is unique unto itself.  

Blissfully free of genre, everything is fair game:  beats; melodies; disquiet; washes; pulses; broken clichés and memes; subliminals; words and voices; chaos; sonorities; field recordings; indeterminacy; world music; the holy; the gutter; otherworld music; drones; synths; samples, etc. etc.  etc.  

I enjoy entering into the mitochondria of what makes a sound  that particular sound and then genetically change it into something entirely different than what it was - with just the essence lingering.  I also like to explore the "in-betweens" - spaces between beats, frequencies, timbres, spaces, tones, etc. In large part, simply, I'm curious to explore it all.  Suffice it to say, the wider your aperture the more you will hear and experience.  Et voila!

Oh!  Headphones will likely provide a more fulsome listening experience for many of the pieces.

He has been mentored in the Bentonia Style of the Delta Blues by Jimmy “Duck” Holmes since 2017.
