Blimey, look what's turned up down the back of the sofa! Some proper house music, no less! Way back in the twilight of the last millennium, we were plying our musical trade under the somewhat hilarious DJ name of Ralphmalph - whipping up a special breed of what now would be called Back-To-The-90s house. Even the most ardent collector of iyrie! cds may not have this one as it's something of a rarity and had been lost to the annuls of time somewhere in the move between London and New York that happened around then. Anyway, extra iyrie! points to anyone who has a copy of this one, and for the rest of you, close your eyes, soak up that springtime sun and remember those good old days!

Duffy s Cabin • All Over The Shop

Back in those days we used to do these Vietnam parties called “Get Some” at On The Rocks. It was really a lapdancing place - it was painted black inside and the walls were mirrored and there were a few poles as well. The boys got dressed up as Vietnam vets, and the girls got dressed up as Suzy Wong style streetwalkers. We'd drop the latest house music overlaid with samples from Vietnam war films, helicopters and explosions and everyone would go bonkers.

As the first outing of the Wizard's Sleeve proved, the contents of the sorcerer's cuff are both myriad and varied. Not satisfied with just taking a look into the Tardis-like left sleeve, we couldn't help but go back for a rummage up the equally intriguing and assorted right sleeve. It all starts out with a magical trip back in time back down memory lane. Has there even been a better song title than “Never Trust A Man (With Egg On His Face)”? I think not. Unless it’s Timbuk3’s “The Future’s So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)”, that is. Anyway, we levitate past several classics (The hilarious Stump and The The sounding as great and relevant as the day Matt Johnson had a bit of a go at Reagan and Thatcher) until a wave of the magic wand really kicks things off and everyone forgets about rabbits in hats and starts dancing in the aisles.

A Long Time Ago When Everything Was In Black And White…*

Now, you youngsters, don’t forget — it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
But I digress. Those loyal few of you with long memories will remember the heady days of the Art Fairy parties. Some of it, anyway. The reason I mention this is this mix is all the sort (as well as some) of the tunes myself and the venerable mister Logan Fisher used to play on those fun–packed nights (Bad Passion, Star Spangled Banner, Risky Disco, The Quarks and even Soul Mechanik — machine guns and all), plus a few that have come about since but would have fitted in nicely. We nicked a quite a number of tunes off Logan’s website (haulesballs.com — most excellent) and he was gracious enough not to mind. Then we had a bit of a dig around in the back of the 2000–2002 section of the records, et on fait du lèche du vitrines.
Anyway, welcome the timely return of the artfairy unstoppable sound
machine, vinyl crackles and all. Happy days. One final thought, kids —
remember that although “Good Santa” may seem like just yesterday,
history is a thing of the past.

*I remember when nanny made 17 puddings...

5. A Long Time Ago When Everything Was In Black And White… - May 2010

Well, this drought is really killing us, isn’t it? Forty days and forty nights of good old biblical style torrential downpouring has lead to the inevitable country-wide hosepipe ban, and there isn’t a thing we can do about it. As the saying goes - it’s no use rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. But a few of the iyrie! faithful have been asking when there’s going to be ‘another of those weird mixes you do’, so here it is - the usual cornucopia of quirky oddities to listen along to as the rain bounces off the caravan roof. When it’s like this everyones mood is up and down like the undergarments of a lady of ill virtue, so let’s hope a few tunes can bring a little ray of sunshine amongst the gloom.

Those of you who dragged their derrieres down there on the opening night may well have found themselves in possession of one of the limited edition cds that were given out.
