Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis gives new life to the sung Latin Mass texts in an accessible, short setting which embraces a variety of jazz styles, from the swinging jazz waltz Kyrie to the up-beat Latin-groove Gloria. The smooth jazz ballad Sanctus, 7/8 Benedictus and soulful Agnus Dei complete this inspiring Mass setting. Underpinned by Todd’s characteristic jazz harmonies and melodic craftsmanship, it is suitable for performance both liturgically and as part of a concert by mixed choirs of all abilities. The work can be accompanied by piano alone (as written or extemporised), jazz trio (piano, bass and drums) or jazz ensemble (alto saxophone, 2 trumpets and jazz trio – parts available separately).

Composer's note:
In writing Jazz Missa Brevis for Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, I have aimed to create simple and lasting music that will work equally well in liturgy or in concert. Drawing on my own piano playing style, all of the movements began life as extended improvisations which I then honed and developed into the completed movements. I hope this ensures that there is a genuine jazz ‘heart’ to each of the sections. In the same way that I would in a jazz gig, I’ve made sure there is a contrast of rhythmic feels between the movements. I hope singers, musicians and conductors will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed writing it!

"The Day of Allied Voices" is a prayer for peace commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, commissioned by Jane DeLoach Morison and the Highlands Youth Ensemble. The first movement “Lord Have Mercy” cries out to God for deliverance, particularly appropriate in the setting of war, anxiety, distress and upheaval. The second movement narrows the focus to the American people in the Presidential prayer “Let Our Hearts Be Stout,” delivered by Roosevelt as the Allied Forces were on their way to the beaches.

The third movement commemorates these beaches of Normandy with the French text “Chanson d’Automne.” This poem was played over the air to covertly signal the Allied Forces that the military maneuvers of “Operation Overlord” had begun. It also reflects the pain, sorrow, and heaviness experienced by many during the war.

Movement four, “For the Fallen,” was written during the First World War – not the Second – but is beautifully applicable to memorialize any military sacrifice, regardless of time period. The final movement, “We Will Be Glad,” offers a window of hope in the belief that ultimately it is God who will heal us and our land when we turn to Him; an answer to the cries for mercy in the first movement.

Benjamin Dawson is a composer, theorist and violinist. He is currently pursuing his D.M.A. in composition at the University of Georgia, studying with Dr. Adrian Childs. As part of his duties at UGA, Dawson teaches Aural Skills III and IV. Prior to this, Dawson was adjunct professor at East Tennessee State University (Johnson City, TN) and King University (Bristol, TN) teaching Theory and Orchestration courses. Dawson earned his M.M. in Theory/Composition from Appalachian State University (Boone, NC), studying composition with Dr. Ben Hjertmann and theory with Dr. Jennifer Snodgrass. During undergrad, he studied composition with Dr. Maria Niederberger at ETSU. 

Dawson has composed a dozen independent film scores and has arranged/orchestrated over twenty projects for Symphony of the Mountains (Kingsport, TN. Recent compositional endeavors include the writing and producing of his second work for musical theatre, four orchestral charts to accompany a bluegrass band, and a piece for viola, bass clarinet and percussion that depicts the effect of natural disaster on the Georgia coastline. Dawson is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and is in frequent demand as a performer and teacher.
