Jacques Lacan is arguably the most controversial psychoanalyst of our time. Psychoanalysis is certainly one of the most contested areas of debate within feminism. This book presents articles on feminine sexuality by Lacan and members of the &#233cole freudienne, the school of psychoanalysis that Lacan directed in Paris from 1964 to 1980. The question of feminine sexuality has divided the psychoanalytic movement since the 1920s. Despite their opposition to each other, contemporary psychoanalysis and feminism both reject Freud's phallocentrism. This book forcefully reasserts the importance of the castration complex in Freud's work and of the phallus in the work of Lacan, offering them not as a reflection of a theory based on male supremacy and privilege but as the terms through which any such privilege is exposed as a fraud. Lacan's rereading of Freud is seen here to reveal, in a way that no other account has been able to do, the arbitrary and fictional nature of both male and female

The second lecture in the Mahmoud Alnaouq lecture series was presented by Angelita Biscotti, a tutor and lecturer at the University of Melbourne. This lecture explores the liberatory potential of psychoanalysis using decolonial reworkings of key psychoanalytic concepts such as transference, resistance and free association. The lecture discusses two cases from Lara and Stephen Sheehi's "Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine." 

Mahmoud Alnaouq was a recipient of an Australia Awards scholarship who had listed the University of Melbourne as his first preference for a Master of International Relations. He would have been with us on campus today, but the Zionist Israeli regime killed him, along with 19 members of his family, in the town of Deir Al Balah last October. The Mahmoud Alnaouq lecture series is held in his honour outside Mahmoud's Hall, formerly known as Arts West, in the University of Melbourne.

This week Coop and Taylor had the pleasure of hosting Adrian Johnston. Adrian is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. He is the author of many books, including Time Driven: Metapsychology and the Splitting of the Drive; Irrepressible Truth:  On Lacan’s “The Freudian Thing”; and A New German Idealism: Hegel, Žižek, and Dialectical Materialism. This year he has co-published, with Lorenzo Chiesa, God Is Undead: Psychoanalysis for Unbelievers, and has published Infinite Greed: The Inhuman Selfishness of Capital, which is the subject of today’s topic.

When Marx’s Paris manuscripts on political economy and on Hegelian philosophy were posthumously published in 1932, in German, under the title Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, the publication produced shock waves in the intellectual world and in Marxist circles.

Their publication rejuvenated the reception of Marx’s writings. It opened new interpretations of his work. It gave birth to an entire field of philosophical investigation on alienation. And it gave rise to contentious debates over the value of the youthful, philosophical writings of Marx, as opposed to the more mature, scientific, economic writings.

In the Paris manuscripts, Marx develops, famously, a theory of human self-alienation, a first sketch of his signature historical account, focusing mostly on the transition from capitalism to communism, with the abolition of private property, and insights from his work on the critique of Hegel, specifically focused on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit rather than his Philosophy of Right. The Paris manuscripts have generated a large body of remarkable scholarship along all of these dimensions.

At Marx 4/13, we return to the question of alienation in conversation with a brilliant philosopher in the psychoanalytic tradition, Renata Salecl, who joins us in New York from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Renata Salecl will discuss forms of social and political alienation that are currently being experienced and spreading widely across extreme right-wing movements in the West today. She will also reflect on apathy in today’s times and how it differs from alienation. Lacan’s text will help us understand the logic of desire and anxiety. In the seminar, we will look at the role anxiety, desire, and jouissance play in people’s fascination with populist authoritarian leaders—and how those emotions are experienced as well on the other side of the political spectrum.

Renata Salecl proposes that we reread Marx’s theory of alienation from the Paris manuscripts in conversation with Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic writings, more specifically, paired with Lacan’s lecture “The Dream by the Butcher’s Beautiful Wife,” from a seminar he delivered on April 9, 1958, at the Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris.
