Joe Wink's Pre Party for Broken Essence  #143

Le trip-hop naît à la fin des années 1980 à Bristol, ville métissée où se croisent influences jamaïcaines, funk et hip-hop. De cette effervescence urbaine émerge le “Bristol Sound” : une musique lente, planante et expérimentale, fusionnant hip-hop et électronique. Le terme "trip-hop" n’apparaît qu’en 1994 sous la plume du journaliste Andy Pemberton dans Mixmag, mais les racines du genre sont bien à Bristol, au sein du collectif The Wild Bunch, où évoluent Tricky, 3D, Daddy G ou Nellee Hooper, futurs Massive Attack. Inspirés par les sound systems jamaïcains, ils mêlent hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz et reggae pour créer un son urbain, atmosphérique et inédit.

Le trip-hop se reconnaît à son ambiance sombre, mélancolique et cinématographique. On y trouve des breakbeats ralentis, des basses profondes, des samples (extraits de films, instruments acoustiques, textures électroniques) et des voix souvent féminines — Beth Gibbons, Shara Nelson, Martina Topley-Bird — qui apportent émotion et sensualité. C’est un hip-hop atmosphérique, centré sur les textures et les émotions plus que sur la danse.

Le genre doit beaucoup à Massive Attack, Portishead et Tricky. Massive Attack pose les bases avec Blue Lines (1991). Portishead apporte une dimension cinématographique avec Dummy (1994). Tricky dévoile un univers plus sombre et minimaliste avec Maxinquaye (1995). Ces albums propulsent le trip-hop sur la scène internationale et influencent une génération d’artistes, de DJ Shadow à Morcheeba.

À la fin des années 1990, le trip-hop devient un phénomène mondial. Il influence la pop, le rock alternatif et l’électronique. Björk en intègre les codes, tandis que des labels comme Ninja Tune ou Mo’ Wax soutiennent une scène downtempo inventive. Le genre se diversifie : certains glissent vers la pop ou la soul (Morcheeba, Zero 7), d’autres vers des atmosphères cinématiques (Rob Dougan, Archive). Il donne également naissance à des sous-courants comme l’illbient ou le post-trip-hop.

Même si son âge d’or se situe entre 1991 et 2000, le trip-hop continue d’imprégner la musique contemporaine, de Lana Del Rey à FKA Twigs, The xx ou Tame Impala. On le retrouve dans de nombreuses bandes originales, de The Matrix à Luther. Aujourd’hui, il est considéré comme un héritage majeur de la culture électronique britannique : un pont entre hip-hop, pop expérimentale et musique électronique, et une esthétique intime, mélancolique et profondément humaine.
