October – a month that’s very important for Gaels. There’s one reason in particular for this... do you know what it is? That’s right, the Royal National Mòd is almost upon us once again. It’ll be in Fort William this year, and we’re really looking forward to it. Will you be taking part, or will you be watching on TV? The week will celebrate our language and culture through different means. Here’s some vocabulary that’ll be useful for you:
An Comunn Gàidhealach – The Highland Association: The Royal National Mòd is organised by The Highland Association. 
Bàrdachd – Poetry: Your voice goes up and down when reciting a poem. 
Còisir – Choir: Are you in a choir?
Sgeulachd – Story: You can write a fun story for the Mòd!
A’ seinn – Singing: What’s your favourite song to sing?
Farpais – Competition: That competition lasted all afternoon, there were over forty competitors! 
dannsa Gàidhealach – Highland dancing: Highland dancing isn’t easy, you need a lot of skill and energy.  
Britheamh – Adjudicator: I wouldn’t like to be an adjudicator, it’s a big responsibility.

In the eighteenth century, American and British pronunciations were pretty similar. Remember that the British Empire colonized America. Many immigrants traveled to America to start a new life.

So, a fair question is:

Why is American and British pronunciation so different nowadays?

Well, there are many theories, but here’s a reasonable one:

It’s the standard British accent that has radically changed in the past two centuries.

What’s happening in the news today:

Samsung’s new release of its folding smartphone appear to be breaking after being used for only a couple of days. Users reported the screen flickering and turning black before fizzling out completely. Samsung promises the screen can withstand being opened and closed 100 times a day for 5 years.

North Korea has test-fired a new powerful warhead weapon, marking the first launch since a summit with the US ended without an agreement in Vietnam in February this year. It is unclear if it is a missile.

Notre Dame will be shut for six years as it recovers from the devastating fire last Monday. The estimate came as France launched an international competition to design a new spire after the old one collapsed in the blaze.

And finally streaming giant Netflix is raising the costs of its subscription service to fund its own content. Prices will be raised in the US, Mexico, Brazil, and some parts of Europe, and is expected to impact subscriber growth.
