This month’s episode welcomes British producer Leon @Vynehall. After a start DJing around the UK, Leon’s focus shifted to production as he released his debut EP Music for the Uninvited, and a widely acclaimed first album on Ninja Tune called Nothing in Still. Inspired by his grandparents emigration from the UK to New York, Nothing is Still also included a novella and a set of short films, an entire world crafted from the seed of the music. His second and much loved album Rare Forever, however, focused inwards, as Leon explored his own identity, capability, and ambition; although it lacks a traditional narrative, Leon himself became the protagonist. With Rare Forever as a jumping off point, Leon and I explore his journey in self-acceptance, his growth as an artist, and how to thrive from failure as well as success.

Writing for Myself

An attempt to actualize my feelings of gendered dissonance and mindlessness in transit between New Jersey and New York City, fearwilltakeover was inspired by Terre Thaemlitz's work, specifically ideas pulled from Grand Central, detailing her own 72 hour train ride from his hometown in Missouri to Grand Central, Routes not Roots' interview-style spoken word piece from a Japanese crossdresser's identity, and Couture Cosmetique's ambient distillation of fears of violence while travelling in between safe spaces and the forced compulsion to stay silent as to not invite confrontation. (Thaemlitz identifies using a non-essentialist or anti-essentialist framework, switching between feminine/masculine pronouns.) Thaemlitz's work embellished a history of the processing of my own gender while in transit, but instead of one great big move from one place to another, my time was spent in short bursts of travel, 40-80 minutes in between one place and the next. This time spent on the road in between two places of various levels of queer acceptability and history, in my eyes, developed my own battles with self-acceptability and self-definition. Queer theorist Kit Morgan describes a queer-specific type of cognitive dissonance developed by years under a repressive heteronormative school of thought. My experience with this dissonance, as much as it came from a heteronormative upbringing, is just as much a fault of the perceived homonormativity found on social media and beyond. Not being able to fit into either sphere of gendered existence spawned a bout of internal frustration and fear; contemplations about my own identity were really only made alone on the bus rides back and forth from New York. Through it I learned about and aligned myself with a "non-essentialist" ideal of transgendered identity ("refusing the notion of my gender identity stemming from something natural, such as 'inner essence' (or DNA.)) 

Through this mix I have attempted to realize my journey, both physical and spiritual, through sound and music.

Haus Catz is the DJ / Production trio made up of Tailspin, DJ PurRpLeXeD, and Pounces. Together their sound revolves around a wide-ranging palette of house, club, and techno with forays into breaks, lo-fi, and leftfield sensibilities. Their first two EPs "Club Nip, Vol. 1" and "Club Nip, Vol. 2" received support from several standout DJs and tastemakers, including Baltra, Martyn Bootyspoon, Ouri and DJ Plead. 

They've hosted multiple residencies in clubs around Denver, and they also throw all-night warehouse parties with capacity crowds featuring top tier talent and high definition sound. They’ve provided direct support for an array of international underground talent, including Leon Vynehall, Ross From Friends and Barry Can't Swim. Recently, Haus Catz have been finalizing more original music that encapsulates the sound and spirit of their live performances - moody, groovy, and pspspsychedelic. Look for their debut LP, "We Can Move" coming out on November 7th, 2025!
