Intersex people and transgender people are distinct but sometimes overlapping populations with much potential for solidarity. Both groups benefit when their bodily autonomy is respected, and when medical care is provided but not mandated. Both groups have people within that may face stigma for having a body that does not conform to your expectations. Both groups have been here since life began because the essence of life is re~productive variation. 

The transgender pride flag was designed by Monica Helms in 1999, and the intersex pride flag was designed by Morgan Carpenter in 2013.

Intersex Solidarity Day 2024 (The One Who Learns You How To Fly)

Trans and gender diverse people are subject to disproportionate rates of violence and abuse. This is particularly true when we use an intersectional lens to examine the racial and economic contexts that facilitate trans misogyny. Trans lives matter. Trans women are routinely objectified, used as devices for men to explore their sexuality; instrumentalised, used as political scapegoats as signs of the violation of normativity; and erased by the systems of record that seek to ignore; deny and abstract our lives to preserve structures of marginalisation.
Respect yourself and protect yourself, even when the world fails to respect and protect you.

Enjoy almost three hours of Dutch hardcore that gives the listener some idea of the awkward intersections between old style; new style; and happy gabber that reflect the state of the scene in the mid 90s. This episode is part of the project “Voices of Us Ripples.” 

 What it was like moving to a new country as a 16-years-old Malaysian queer international student? In this episode, you will hear from Auriel's journey of navigating transitions, from being silent about her sexuality to coming out to family and friends, from living in Malaysia to settling in Melbourne, and from a foundation-study international student to a professional working full-time in an Australian government department. Embracing changes and challenges and finding connections in the mainstream LGBTQIA+ environment can be difficult. Through listening to Auriel’s stories, you will discover strengths, courage, and tips in different life and career stages. 

About the speaker 

Auriel (she/her) is from Malaysia and has lived in Melbourne for the last nine years. As an international student alumnus who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, she loves meeting others who share these experiences and listening to their stories. Auriel works in Climate Change and Renewable Energy policy currently focusing on climate justice for First Nations people in Victoria. Outside work, Auriel’s life revolves around eating good food (especially dessert), trying to maintain a social life and taking naps with her greyhound, Daphne.

Feifei Liao was born and raised in Sichuan, China. She is multi-passionate, multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual, with the energy to light up a room.
