My guest this month is Dell Rose. Dell is working on a project for his PhD dissertation on Charles Augustus Tulk and the role that Swedenborgianism played in the reforming societies of 19th century Britain. Though Tulk is often only known as the artistic patron of William Blake, he was also one of the earliest advocates of "public science" and his quest to show the spiritual nature of the material world based on Swedenborg's revelations would be widely acclaimed during the period.

This discussion, however, concerns 'ornamental' hermits. We explore this in the context of cultural history and significance of the garden and the esoteric influences that were built around this idea. The hermit and the hermitage were seen as a 'living experiment" of both esoteric wisdom with regard to the significance of plants and also the atmosphere that they created.
As you will hear, this is a complex and nuanced topic, and we consider an array of influences that might have played a part in the obscure phenomenon known as 'eremitism.'

Liminality - Humiliation

A slow-burning, minimalistic soundscape for a dance commission. "Time, At the Door" follows a character, suspended, pacing before a door behind which all of time quietly waits. The piece moves between the urge to step forward and the fear of what lies beyond. When the door opens, the building tension quickly releases into something unexpectedly calm, still, and lovely.

Between the waves of the harsh winters, labyrinths of the puzzling meta-structures, poems of the glory and madness, epics of harsh survival… Every story sinks and comes to rest in the depths of the trenches, ravines, and common void. But even in a comatose state, light can bend and evolve through the surface tension, often fracturing into relatable but unintelligible hypnotic patterns. When happiness becomes liminal itself by being fractured through said wavelets, and twins itself by leaning into the past and future, life might feel like an ocean floor, which explains why I am greatly interested in liminal aesthetics. Perhaps life is not a journey at all, but a momentary shadow play at the ocean’s floor.

This piece tells a soldier’s fragmented, surreal journey at the frontlines. In this place, fear, memory, and hallucination merge into a single, collapsing reality.
It begins in the thick fog of war: cold, tense, disoriented. The frontline rumbles with explosions, hums of war machines, and nearby gunfire. Sometimes, the momentary warmth of the memories eases the pain, but they disperse quickly as the war returns with force. Orders are shouted. Adrenaline rushes. In the chaos of the attack, the soldier takes a wrong path, and a shell explodes.

Everything is blank for a second...

What follows is not death, but something stranger.
From the wreckage, he descends into what seems like another world: a misty field, a hidden cave, a pool that glows with stillness. Sound begins to shift; textures stretch, voices dissolve, reality softens. This is no battlefield, not anymore. Here, sound becomes a hallucinated cinema. Time unravels.

But bliss is brief. The cave is a crater. The pool is blood. The journey ends where it began: in the snow, in silence.

“The Pools Beneath the Crater” invites the listener to step into the collapsing psyche of a dying mind. Blurring war with dream, noise with memory, and body with landscape.

Bio: I was born in Istanbul in 2004. Started music education with piano at the age of 7, went to Eskişehir Conservatory for piano education in middle and high school, and started composition studies at Bilkent University in 2022. 

The composition journey began with constant improvisations on the piano. I composed my first finished piece during the COVID-19 lockdown, and since then, I have continued to write. Throughout my journey, I have experimented with various music genres, styles, and disciplines, and I continue to do so.
