Exclusive: Lis Sarroca - 3000

Barcelona-based exceptional artist Lis Sarroca continues her triumphal path of releasing quality music. After EPs on Shall Not Fade, Chiwax, a contribution to Cinthie's DJ Kicks compilation and her own label Maai, she returns to the latter and kicks off its 2022 madness with a club-oriented two tracker called Driven. The EP's title track comes in with a Lis-typical housey bass line, playful synths and slight break-esque nuances as heard in previous releases of Lis and certainly a major influence for her productions. However, Driven takes the floors by storm, the deep tone though breathes another facet of her creative being into the track and perfectly adds a vibe to the track that separates it from usual peak time tracks in a rather classy manner. The B-side, namely 3000, has a proper UK-vibe with a slight Rave-attitude caused by the deep partly bleepy synth-line and spoken vocals. Just as on the A1 Lis manages to create an artsy piece of music that expresses her preferences in an unobtrusive way - on the one side Driven as well as 3000 stoke those peak time moments but on the other side have this depth and coolness to not do the obvious and expected and therefore makes floors ache for more.

Show Time, enjoy this week’s episode hosted by Spanish DJ & producer duo, KYODAI. Kyodai means "brothers" in Japanese and that's a good clue for guessing who’s behind these two heads, the producers are known under a variety of different names! They started at the end of the 90’s their main project called WAGON COOKIN’ alongside with their own record label APPETIZERS and the duo gained respect from musical heavyweights like Lauren Garnier, Masters At Work, Jimpster, Gilles Peterson, Rainer Trüby, and they regularly release under a variety of different names for labels such as Compost, Odori, Om, Lovemonk......... 
Kyodai together with Wagon Cookin have had a strong run of releases since their debut here on Freerange Records Their "Mi Rumba EP" must have impressed a lot of people as they went on to release a follow up EP for Mad Mats blossoming Local Talk label with "Breaking EP", supported by top names, until reaching the top list of the Gilles Peterson's "An All Winners Show", and to be part of the GTA V soundtrack, also have an EP due on Poker Flat called "Never Know". Kerri Chandler dug it enough to include on his RA podcast and it was also picked up for the Cielo Compilation on Nervous, resulting many request for remixes and productions. 
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the label and their first acclaimed album APPETIZERS both with the same name, they are preparing a bunch of releases restarting the label with the original Album in digital format and new EP’s counting for this special occasion with big names from the electronic scene as well.

absolutely on music is Torture the Artist's monthly radio show broadcasted live from the Übel & Gefährlich in Hamburg, Germany for their community radio station [sic]nal. Recommended by Telekom Electronic Beats absolutely on music is hosted by Torture the Artist head Holger Breuer and Marc Wolf, a project affiliate and co-club owner of Luna, a cultural and nightlife institution in Kiel. The first hour of absolutely on music, which is nominally referring to Haruki Murakami’s eponymous work, is either dedicated to upcoming, trending or outstanding music releases or a deeply personal and intimate conversation with changing guests about their music and further related topics. The show culminates in DJ-sets from Holger and Marc’s guests and the host themselves, taking the listeners on a journey through the curators’ most recent findings thereby switching between various genres such as House, Breaks, Acid or whatever’s found its way on the turntables respectively on their USBs. Having heard one of the shows it becomes obvious that Marc and Holger as well as their guests do not just love music, they know music and do not hold back to pass on their stock in a humorous manner to their listener and curate highly emotive sets to release them into the night or whenever and wherever one tunes in.

Small Great Tunes Vol. 2 is another strong compilation of original tracks (three on each side) by artists of the Small Great Things. label. The record starts with “Something Hot”, a collaboration of Marc Brauner & Luca Olivotto, a truly hot dancefloor shaker based on groovy basslines and chord stabs, spiced up with vocals and saxophone chops. A2, “Malf Hoon” by UC Beatz, is a warm sounding, smooth house track with a rave-like bass sound and long, progressive percussion buildups. The A-side culminates with “Down Mode” by Lis Sarroca, an 80s-inspired bassy house track, which is slightly darker and suited for heavier sets. The B side starts with “House Nation” by Marcus Raute, a straight-forward house banger in the tradition of the genre. You get groovy piano chords, a strong house bassline, vocal “yeahs” etc. A simply great tune with a lot of power. “Dorado” by Kid Simius is a dreamy and slightly eclectic tune with moody Juno sounds, subtle guitar solos and a beautiful storytelling voice in the breaks. “From Back In The Day” by Habibi Grooves, the last track on the B-side is a deep tune with techy percussions and moody synthesizer loops. The heavy sounding rhythm section in this one makes sure it’s distinctive in any house music set. “Small Great Tunes Vol. 2”, the fourth vinyl record by the Small Great Things. label featuring 6 original tracks is surely a must-have for DJs and lovers of house music. Delivering a unique variety of bangers and tooly tracks it will prove to be very useful in sets and boutique record collections alike.

Lis spoke on what inspired her: “I noticed an ever so slight piano motif within the track, which I then mixed with some retro-sounding elements to give it that old-school house sound I really love.”

Exclusive: Glo My - Sang Woo

The fourth outing on Lis Sarroca's Maai Records is a female affair and consists out of five tracks from aspiring artists continuing the label's (housey) melodic vibe. Milanese by choice but Mexico City girl by heart Glo My isn't new to the scene as she's had several outings on labels House Salad or Veneno over the past years. Her mixture of Deep House, Breaks and UKG surely makes her one of the artists to look out for in the future especially with her Squid Game-reference, namely Sang Woo, on Lis' label. Sang Woo is an advanced Deep House track with such a finesse that it works in any kind of set that aims to hound people over the floor and pushes dancers to their peak. Its temporizing built-up with a smooth synth line as well as the tonal change in synths, working out the bleepiness in the track, create long forgotten peak-time moments with proper Deep House music. If latter had to be proven again, then Sang Woo fired a salvo at those moments reactivating our memories that music can be both: club-oriented and beautiful.

You do not necessarily associate the Mexican electronic music scene with the deeper nuances and facets but rather with Dark Disco and Melodic Techno. All the more Glo My’s way to walk the initially-named path is even more impressive. Originally from Mexico City Jimena, Glo My’s real name, now resides in Italy’s north, Milan to be more precise, spreading her ever groovey yet melodically demanding and sound-wise ambitious music to and with the world. Therefore the artist provides her listeners with a potpourri of Deep House, Breaks, UK Garage and keeps a ravey and with abstract textures sprinkled vibe, which elegantly and smoothly unites the before-mentioned genres and influences to one homogenous sound-experience adding up to the Glo My-way. Her own events, Hell Town, surely have helped Glo My to dive deeper into compiling her sets and creating unique tonal ecstasies but these days the artist distinguishes herself with several productions, something Glo My has only been doing for a little longer than four years. Her latest addings to her catalogue of musical outings are her track Sang Woo on Lis Sarroca’s Maai label, as well as an EP on Womxn Records called Lejos de Casa and another single track, Hey Kiss Me, on Bass Water Freak Out. Having been kissed by Glo My’s style, probably as softly as it was once sung about, there’s only one thing left to say: It’s either the Glo My Way or no way at all. With several releases under her belt Marie Lefur steps up under her MLF pseudonym to deliver the first episode of the art:cast series of 2023. Mixing uplifting, disco-esque, 90s and trance-influenced tracks from her conglomerate Marie compiled and mixed a journey through the sub-genres of House maintaining a powerful and not easing synthesis of the art, pushing the listeners through the full hour of the podcast. The energetic DJ does not seem to slow down in any way, may it be production-wise, Marie just released a full EP under her (more) Trance-moniker DJ Super Jackpot on Community Center and a track on Lis Sarroca's MAAI label as MLF, or as a DJ. With so much energy and talent the French artist is surely one to look out for in the future providing (her) music a groovey yet melodic touch giving it an irresistible twist you do not want to miss. Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.

Klaus Benedek grew up in a small town near Vienna. His interest in electronic music began during the 90s techno hype. He spent hours watching video clips on MTV and viva and thus gaining knowledge about electronic music. In 2004, he began teaching himself to produce. Gathering his inspiration wherever he could, he began collecting 12" vinyl records the same year and 2 years later got his first dj-gigs. From 2008 till 2010 he was one of the resident DJs at the MNML Thursdays in the Camera Club. In 2012 he started with Alex Kolodziej the event-series Tellerbetrieb. Currently he finds most of his inspiration in Chicago House, Deep House, Disco and Breakbeat. After releases on labels like Petrol Dollar, Subversaal, rekooda, Soul Shift Music, Clean and Dirty Recordings and tanzbar, Klaus launched his own label forTunea in 2014.
