❏ STREAMING MEDIA ❏

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider. The verb to stream identifies the process of delivering or obtaining media in this manner.[clarification needed] Streaming refers to the delivery method of the medium, instead of the medium itself. Distinguishing delivery method from the media distributed applies particularly to telecommunications networks, as almost all of the delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television, streaming apps) or inherently non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, music CDs). There are challenges with streaming content on the Internet. For instance, users whose Internet connection lacks satisfactory bandwidth may experience stops, lags, or slow buffering of the content. And users lacking compatible hardware or software systems may be unable to stream certain content.

Live streaming is the delivery of Internet content in real-time much as live television broadcasts content over the airwaves with a television signal. Live internet streaming takes a form of source media (e.g. a video camera, an audio tracks interface, screen capture software), an encoder to digitize the content, a media publisher, and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content. Live streaming does not need to be recorded at the origination point, although it frequently is.

Streaming is an option to file datvloading, a process where the end-user obtains the entire file for this content before watching or listening to it. Through streaming, an end-user can use their media player to get started on playing digital video or digital sound content before the complete file has been transmitted. The word streaming media can connect with media other than video and audio, such as live closed captioning, ticker tape, and real-time text, which are considered streaming text.

What an absolute dream it was to play at this event, a long held bucket list of mine fulfilled! Headed up to beautiful Bundjalung/lismore over Easter for Tropical Fruits, a local institution in the Northern Rivers, famous for its NYE parties.

This one was Easter Saturday at the aptly named Repentance Hall, playing a lengthy 3 hour set to 200 or so people. No phone coverage at all - a great crowd and delicious food, it was perfect. Easily, hands down, one of the top 5 gigs I've ever played. I am so thankful to Tropical Fruits for the opportunity.

Minutes before I was going to play, I corrupted my SD card on my recorder and quickly switched to a Voice Note recording - this upload is a re-recording of exactly what went down up in Bundjalung/lismore over Easter.

February and March 2022 saw close to 1,000 schools in the Northern Rivers region temporarily close, with some schools unable to return to their original locations. The disaster resulted in damaged infrastructure and educational materials, displaced families and impacted teachers. 

Southern Cross University researchers have launched the Floods + Me project to work with young people in gathering their experiences during and following the natural disaster and its impact on their schooling. 

Dr Simone Blom and Dr Liberty de Rivera speak on the SCU Buzz podcast about the research project and their upcoming education framework aimed at helping schools prepare for floods.

Nick Spurway builds his sets under the ethos of “less chin stroking, more dancing”, having no trouble flipping between thumping techno, high energy disco and pumping, swingy house within the hour. Nick established his reputation as a killer DJ in his early twenties, playing for numerous parties in Eora/sydney along Oxford Street and deep in Marrickville warehouse party territory, cutting between pitch perfect, vinyl-only opening sets and late-night banging closers.

Across the last ten years, Nick has shared his sound at straight techno nights and day-long queer festivals, from tiny basement parties to 10,000 festival goers. He’s been invited to play for some of the best local and national institutions including Something Else, Loose Ends, Dark Mofo, Midsumma, SASH and the infamous Pavlova Bar parties, playing up to six hours at a time. Being continually booked at a wide range of events has helped Nick create and refine his sets; tying together his long established love of the “holy trinity” of house, disco and funk, with techno, ambient, breakbeat, dance-punk and new wave thrown in for good measure. 

By the time he moved interstate to Naarm/melbourne, Nick had teamed up with fellow DJ, producer and activist Sophie Forrest, forming the duo SWEATY, culminating in a triumphant and well-received closing set at Midsumma Carnival 2022 and co-founded Fur Coat, a "gender-bender discotheque for queers and their peers", with Sophie, Matt Jay and SVEN, throwing parties in the inner west of Sydney with a final, 8-hour party before the pandemic hit, for Sydney Mardi Gras 2020. Both these collaborations continue to the present day. When he's not throwing his own parties, Nick is seen playing alongside some of the very best of local and international talent, such as Simon Caldwell, Move D, Bicep, JNETT, Ayebatonye, Stereogamous, Efdemin, Jane Fitz, Lorna Clarkson, Art Simone, CC:DISCO! and Gavilán Rayna Russom, to name a few.

With spectacular timing, Nick moved himself south to Melbourne in 2020, before lockdowns sent everyone inside for almost two years. Undeterred by this and with no clubs to play at, Nick expanded his talents elsewhere: elevating his music production with one to one mentoring from production legend Red Rack’em as part of his groundbreaking ‘How I Program’ music production community in 2020; hosting and producing a monthly radio show ‘Radio Electronica Australia’, since 2021, and releasing his first original track in 2022.

He kept his DJ chops fresh with live streams from his living room and guest-appearances on fellow DJ’s radio shows. Instead of dropping these pandemic-era habits when clubs re-opened, Nick continues to participate in all of the above, with his popular radio show celebrating four years on the air, in February 2025, with no signs of slowing down.

When Nick began to release his first tracks, he decided to separate the DJ from the producer and a new project was created: Drama in the Sauna. His first completed track, a remix of ‘Gradient’ by Eora/sydney artist Lagoon, was released in 2021, followed by his debut EP on Blur Records in 2022, entitled ‘Hot Water Laundry Service’. In December 2023, Nick released his second EP, 'Rushall', in time for summer, with self-produced tracks 'tongue twister' and 'It's Funny' dropped in 2024 and 'Can't Sleep', produced with frequent collaborator Future Self, released on Self Control Records in January 2025.

After five years down south, Nick moved back to Eora/Sydney in early 2025, reconnecting and establishing his love for the city that made his DJing, bringing with him producing, collaborations and radio, to begin a new phase of his career as it approaches its 20th anniversary.

Southern Cross University is a multi-campus university on Australia's east coast, with campuses in southeast Queensland adjacent to the Gold Coast Airport, in New South Wales at Lismore and in Coffs Harbour, where the University’s National Marine Science Centre is also located.
