Presenting CHAINSAW HD Professional Sound Effects Collection. I am one of the lucky few who live in the enchanted land of chainsaws. On any given day someone nearby is running one. Whether it's a homeowner cutting firewood or a professional logging operation, the chainsaw sound abounds. I also happen to own a very heavy, loud and obnoxious chainsaw that I purchased in 1999 when I was a in my "mountain man" phase. This chainsaw is very powerful and has very sharp "logger" skip chain on the bar that cuts through wood like it was butter. I have recorded my chainsaw many times over the years and this collection includes some of the finer moments of my cutting down trees and preparing firewood for the winter.

Included are very close up cuts and crazy doppler bys along with a wide assortment of logging ambient sounds recorded fairly close and very far. Some of the logger ambience tracks have multiple chainsaws running at the same time and distant tree falls. The doppler bys were created by yours truly swinging the chainsaw very close to a MKH-8040ST microphone set while revving the crap out it. The saw became heavier the more I swung it and bar oil flew all over the place but I endured and got it done. If you need that crazy "zombie saw slasher" whoosh... It's here. For the not so faint of heart video game sound designer who needs steady idles and high rpm engines loops for their project... they're here in all their gut tearing glory.

You can experience the "enchanted land of chainsaws" without every having to set foot in the forest or hanging on to a noisy, dusty and dirty chainsaw. Rev Rev Rev! -Frank

This is the only song that John Cunnick ever recorded on harmonica, which was the first instrument he ever played. His notes about this tune printed in the Songbook are, like many of his prose pieces, both hilarious and informative. A pertinent sample: “Nemesis is what’ll get you in the end: a last straw, fast freight, fast draw or inside straight. The swede is a pair of rollers that pull boards off the greenchain. The chipper is the goddamndest compost shredder you ever heard and I have stories about that mother…”

It is worth reproducing in full the defintion of this word as printed in the Timberbound Songbook: “A timberbound tree is a curved one. They look reconciled to the shape they’re in, but cut into one and you’ll find they are under a great deal of stress half a century after they were first warped.” The song alludes to the early experiences that made John who he was. I never knew the man, but I feel certain that he was like many musicians I know who remain under a great deal of stress long after they are first warped by sorrow. Music serves as a healthy tool to open the release valve for that stress--often it’s the only tool worth using.

Timberbound

This song describes Dave Berge's his experience coming to Oregon and working in the woods. Like John, Dave had a knack for turning his work in the woods into memorable, original songs. We were honored and overjoyed to have Dave join us as we recorded this tune. While in the studio with him, he informed us that John and Kim played everything in the key of C major, and so he wrote this song to impress Kim and to have a song of his own he could play with them. You can hear more of Dave’s indelible autoharp playing on the album he and Hobe made together in 1986, Dog Salmon & Rutabagas.

The Timber Faller

Today I discovered this little recollection I typed up after attending the 2012 reunion of the original Timberbound band:
Just before recording this song with Timberbound out at one of the cabins at Keasey, Hobe stomped his foot, threw up one finger into the air, and proclaimed: "Let it be noted for the record that 'Vine Maple Valley Waltz' is the first song in that book for a reason. It is the heart of the Timberbound Songbook." Everyone  got quiet and Kim said, "That song is very much about this place," referring to Keasey.  They didn't say another word, just started in on this song, the Vine Maple Valley Waltz.

“Brotherhood of the Spirit:” An Unvarnished Window into New Age Communal Life of the Post-Vietnam Era in Western Massachusetts

Recorded by Carrie Nobel Kline and Joan Stoia for the 350th Anniversary of Northfield, Massachusetts Oral History Project in the Fall of 2022.

This 65-minute audio recorded narrative offers a moving, compellingly honest account of back-to-the-land, intentional, spiritual, drug-free, homegrown living by members of the “Brotherhood of the Spirit (BOS).” Founded by Michael Metelica in 1969, the nascent tree house gathering was driven by aspirations of simple living and honest dealings. From a rural hangout it soon became the promised land for many alienated, aimless youngsters, eager to embrace drug-free opportunities for collective living and collaborative accomplishments. Our protagonist, Mark Alvin, a current resident of Northfield, ruminates in compelling detail about the “fantastic adventures” of his seven years as a committed community member at a time when, “We thought we were going to save the world.” 

Mark Alvin found himself in the company of others consumed by desires to make art and music, “cooky, creative, wacky” people attracted to the place, along with a wide variety of misfits, artists, people just out of treatment centers and mental institutions. With all of this formative activity going on around him, tone-deaf Metelica, having the charismatic power of making others do what he wanted, was fixated on becoming a rock star. BOS, which by the early 1980s had acquired houses in other villages, went on to purchase the Shea Theater and surrounding block in Turners Falls, MA as the population of the Brotherhood blossomed to several hundred passionately involved members. 

Perhaps the most vivid of Alvin's descriptions depict farming operations in the Northfield bottom lands along the Connecticut River involving field crews with scores of young workers whose collective ambitions met all challenges with success and celebration. Reflecting on such a rich experience, Alvin exudes enthusiasm at the opportunity of finally fully sharing his story with people eager to hear it—and getting to tell it in his own way.

Hobe Kytr wrote new lyrics for the tune “Cotton Mill Girls” to create this song. We include it here because we love it, and it seemed to be a staple of the repertoire during Timberbound’s public performances.

Cedar Mill Boys

John and Kim’s recording of this wonderful song contains a bounciness and a bluesiness that surprised and delighted me the first time I heard it. The song’s opening line is as fine an evocation of Northwest weather as one will ever hear. Hobe informed me that John (who was largely self-educated) read 19th-century men of letters extensively. There are many finely turned phrases in this song that reflect the elegance and clarity of that tradition.
