30 de junio de 1960. En Kinshasha se celebra el acto formal por el que se certifica la independencia de la República Democrática del Congo, entre los testigos se encuentra el rey de Bélgica, Balduino, que toma la palabra y, ante la incredulidad de los presentes no duda en loar, en su discurso oficial, la figura de su antepasado, el rey Leopoldo II. 

Sin embargo algo extraordinario ocurre cuando Balduino termina de hablar: Patrice Lumumba, el joven primer ministro toma la palabra saltándose el protocolo para recordar al monarca y al pueblo belga que los congoleños no alcanzaron la independencia por la gracia magnánima de Bélgica, sino que esta fue el resultado del tesón, la fuerza, el sufrimiento, la lucha y la sangre de los congoleños.

Apenas seis meses después, un 17 de enero de 1961, Lumumba, cerca de Elisabethville, se apoya contra un árbol haciendo frente a un pelotón de fusilamiento ante la presencia de militares, autoridades y contratistas belgas, que junto con la CIA, habían apoyado y dado cobertura al golpe de Estado encabezado por el coronel Mobutu y que puso fin al sueño de un Congo libre, democrático y a salvo de las injerencias y el saqueo occidental.

La série "Time Rewind” plonge l’auditeur.ice dans un voyage radiophonique fascinant en explorant les archives d'hier pour éclairer les questions sensibles d'aujourd'hui.

Que se passe-t-il quand on interroge les archives de la RTBF sur le passé colonial de la Belgique?

Time rewind  opère un retour dans le temps et plonge les auditeur.ices dans le monde d’avant, les laissant découvrir comment des questions telles que les crimes commis par Léopold II, l’exploitation des ressources du Congo, le statut des congolais et la façon dont ils étaient traités sont abordées à différents moments au sein d’un organe de média public, qui reflète forcément la façon de pensée dominante de son époque.

La plongée est saisissante et permet de mesurer le chemin parcouru… ou pas.

Time rewind, c’est l’Histoire qui se raconte quasi sans voix off. Les archives s’articulent entre elles pour nous rappeler que les enjeux actuels ont des racines profondes dans notre passé.  En les revisitant, “Time Rewind” apporte un éclairage essentiel sur notre présent.

AfricaNow! Special May 29, 2024 Lumumba, Colonialism & A People’s History of the DRC, & Destabilization of the DRC Dissected

Topics and Guests: A special edition of AfricaNow! which is part of the day-long special The Centrality of Congo to Black Liberation presented by WPFW in partnership with Friends of the Congo during WPFW's Spring Pledge Drive.  This segment for the next two hours looks at the legacy of Lumumba and his assassination, colonialism, and a people’s history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and dissects the current destabilization of the DRC—connecting the past and the present.  The Centrality of Congo to Black Liberation from 5am until 8pm, is an exploration of why Congo must matter to the whole of humanity around the globe. We will delve into why Frantz Fanon stated in his book, "Toward the African Revolution," Let us be sure never to forget it; the fate of all of us is at stake in the Congo.  We begin with a recent discussion with Dr. Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja on the legacy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s first prime minister Patrice Lumumba and his assassination, colonialism impact and people’s history movement for liberation in the DRC.  Dr. Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja, professor in the Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. Professor Nzongola is the author of several books and numerous articles such as: Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Africa; Nation-Building and State Building in Africa; and Le Mouvement Démocratique au Zaïre, 1956-1996. Dr Nzongola’s book The Congo from Leopold to Kabila: A People’s History, won the 2004 Best Book Award of the African Politics Conference Group (APCG), an organization of U.S.-based political scientists specializing on Africa. https://aaad.unc.edu/faculty-staff/georges-nzongola-ntalaja/

In the second hour of the special edition of AfricaNow! which is part of the day-long special The Centrality of Congo to Black Liberation presented by WPFW in partnership with Friends of the Congo, we feature a recent conversation with Akilimali Chomachoma and Claude Gatebuke which dissects the current destabilization of the DRC.   The conversation dissects the M23—Rwanda’s involvement; the continued neo-colonial role of multinational corporations and western nations who are using the conflict to exploit the DRC’s vast resources; the massive loss of life and the plight of internally displaced people and more. Riverwest Radio provides a community platform for education, advocacy and creativity, as well as an outlet for marginalized and alternative voices in our neighborhood and beyond. We invite all Milwaukeeans not only to listen, but to take an active role in the production of their own show and become stewards of the station.

Ranie Ribeiro's artistic journey has taken on new dimensions and disciplines. Formerly known by his DJ moniker D-Ribeiro, Ranie Ribeiro is solidifying himself as a harpist. 

One of the notable aspects of his transformation is not only embracing the role of a composer, but also as a stage performer. 
For award winning choreographer Sedrig Verwoert’s latest piece “The Ritual” (2023), Ribeiro was initially commissioned as a co-composer alongside Phantom Wizard. Eventually both self taught musicians performed live on stage while Sedrig Verwoert and Alanna Archibald executed the piece in elegant movements.  

In live performances at acclaimed venues such as Paradiso, Melkweg and de Doelen (2023) Ribeiro used the harp to experiment with classical, electronica and hiphop elements while creating and adding on to existing compositions he describes as meditative and vulnerable. Ribeiro also appeared with singer-songwriter Linde Schone on NPO 3FM and with the newly formed Kinship Ensemble at Ruigoord (2023).

Ribeiro unveils his talents as a score composer for the first time on Het Jaar Rond on Nous’Klaer (2021), commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Embracing the harp’s delicate resonance he went on scoring various projects such as Het Limburgse Landschap (2021), Short Scores (2022) commissioned by Eye Film, and most recently, Waka Nanga Mi (2023). The latter short film was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and received massive public acclaim.

Après avoir fait ses études à l'INSAS en mise en scène et radio, Guillaume Istace déploie son énergie dans la création sonore pour le théâtre (il a travaillé sur une cinquantaine de spectacles depuis sa sortie de l'école) et dans la réalisation de documentaires radiophoniques. 

Il a réalisé une vingtaine de documentaires. Il s'est particulièrement attaché à interroger la question raciale aux USA, au travers de plusieurs opus : « Harlem 1997 », la série « Mood Indigo » avec « Face à l'homme blanc », et « Obama », mais aussi,  plus récemment  « Sur les traces de Harlem »... Il a aussi beaucoup exploré le collage de matériaux divers (archives, extrait de films, musiques...) au travers d'oeuvres comme son documentaire sur les films d'horreur « Radioscopie de la peur », mais aussi son hommage radiophonique au chanteur Prince « I hate snow in april », sa série de capsules sonores « 240 secondes » ou encore ses mixtape « La K7 de Guillaume ». 

En 2003, il est lauréat de la Fondation Belge de la Vocation et reçoit le Prix SACD-SCAM du meilleur documentaire pour « 240 secondes ». En 2007, son documentaire « On n’est pas des animaux : pornographie et sexualité en question » a été sélectionné au festival international « Prix Europa » à Berlin.  

En 2017, il fait également partie du collectif fondateur de l'ASAR, l'AsSociation des Auteurs, réalisateurs, producteurs Radio dont il est entre autre le secrétaire général.

En 2017, il réalise « L'envol de l'école », une série documentaire qui retrace l'aventure d'une bande de passionnés de pédagogie qui se lancent dans la création de l'école de leur rêve. Au travers de six épisodes de 25 minutes, « L'envol de l'école »  immerge l'auditeur dans le réel des profs et des élèves et rend compte de la confrontation de ce projet utopique à la réalité du terrain.

Sa dernière création, "Time Rewind, est une série documentaire qui plonge l’auditeur.ice dans un voyage radiophonique fascinant en explorant les archives d'hier pour éclairer les questions sensibles d'aujourd'hui.
