Diagnosed with Lupus at 14 and surviving three near death experiences has never stopped Sandra Epps. Like a butterfly she emerged from what many would have considered a death sentence to become an entrepreneur, artist, doll curator and advocate for her community.
The founder of Sandy's Land LLC, she produces the annual Detroit Doll Show. The largest Black doll show in the nation, The Detroit Doll Show celebrates history, culture, self-love and diversity with the promotion of dolls of color.
She uses art to uplift others in the community. Her face painting of beautiful butterflies at community events has served as a form of celebration for individuals who have battled with cancer, live with Lupus, suffer from alopecia or otherwise in need of hope. She uses butterflies because they are symbolic of transformation, rebirth, peace, hope and prosperity.

Sandra Epps: Founder of Detroit Doll Show Celebrates Culture

Monica Messina hosted the Access Hour to discuss Lupus. As a volunteer for the WI chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA), she wanted to increase awareness of this chronic disease which primarily attacks younger women and shortens their lives.

The Cruel Mystery and Inequity of Lupus

Lupus is a chronic disease, an autoimmune disease where the body system that usually fights infection attacks healthy tissue instead.
Lupus Warriors Erica Martin and Sharon Harris (the founder of Lupus Detroit) are both in need of kidney transplants after years of living with this incurable disease.
As AFrican AMerican women both of these Lupus Warriors are reaching out to friends, family and community for donor "Heroes."
Unfortunately African Americans compared with Caucasians, are less likely to have signed a donor card or other documents. 
They are joined by Taneshia D. Carswell the Community Relations Coordinator for Gift of Life Michigan who explains how a kidney donor can come from a living hero a donation from a recently deceased hero can save many. Every donor can save 8 lives and enhance over 75 more. 
This dynamic trio are here to share their journey so that others can learn the facts and be a hero to someone in need of an organ trasplant.
