Alma Mitchell Field Recording: Superb Lyrebird
The Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) is an ancient species originating in the primeval forests of Gondwanaland, one of the earliest songbirds, and a superb mimic. Found on another unmarked tape, this recording was probably captured by Alma in the dense, wet sclerophyll forests of the Dandenong Ranges, near Melbourne, probably in the 1960s or 1970s. Sherbrooke forest is a favourite haunt of lyrebirds and their appreciative audience, and Alma used to take her portable reel-to-reel tape recorder there during the 1960s and 1970s to record the rich variety of birdsong in the forest.
