Coming direct from Frankfurt, the fourth EP on the excellent Konfus label is another exquisite example of deep electronic music, excellently produced while aimed squarely at the dancefloor. A joint effort from Matthias Schildger & Rupert Hartick, it showcases real class in sound and execution throughout.

The opener comes under the artist name CNTRL, with the title of 'Lose Control' and it's a fantastic percussive groove, landing a little in the minimal camp in terms of clicky percs, but incredibly deep too, with an off-beat drum pattern and a bassline which is so low that it feels as if it's below you, rather than coming through the speakers. Subtle pads sit softly in the background, just clear enough to work like an audio glue holding the sounds together in unison, before a closing section to the track where the beats vanish and a metallic vocal reminds us that 'music makes you lose control'. For any DJ who claims to dig the deeper sounds, this is simply so good that you MUST check it out and add it to your collection.    
           
Rupert Hartick delivers the first of his two tracks on the EP with 'No Flash', which is the A2 cut. Another for the trippy sets, this builds around hollow metallic delayed percussive elements, a subby bassline running through the track, all the while the zappy FX sounds work in and around the drums. Perhaps a good description for this track would be a 'linker', one for the DJs who play for several hours and especially into the early hours, where tracks like this come into their own, providing a bridge between the tougher parts of your set, giving some space but keeping things moving in a superbly spacey fashion.

Onto the B-side and Matthias, simply calling himself M.S., brings us 'Tranceparents'. Fear not that this is anything akin to 'trance' of the late 90s/early 00s style, the word trance is perfect to describe the mood here. The tracks drums shuffle and sway, the bassline flows wonderfully and the synths and pads slink through the track as it builds. Added snares give the vibe a real urgency, but this retains a 'heads down, hips grooving' flow, all the while making your head woozy with delight. As with the two cuts on the A-side, this is one for the real deep DJs and clubbers alike.

For Rupert's second track on the EP, which rounds off this brilliant 12", he layers the sounds for 'Tribal Tool'. As one would expect, the focus is on the drums, but with the added bonus of wobbly bass action and some delayed FX which rise and pan throughout the track. If getting your dancefloor locked in to a groove is how you like to play, then this track is 100% for you. The main spacey perc continues throughout the track, the volume altering as it moves through the speakers, inaudible vocals being used almost as FX, all adding to the groove. And what a groove! Deep heads, you need this EP in your lives, that's an order.

For now though, let's concentrate on CH.Dance, the opener on the release. From the opening pulses of the bassline, this has echoes of Vangelis and Moroder put through a Teutonic audio blender; the pace is kept steady, the synths are chiming and metallic, the set-back vocal samples add atmosphere to what is - and this is meant in the most positive way - a lost track from the Blade Runner soundtrack. As authentically 80s electronic as could be possible, without actually being made in that decade, this glistens with retro-futuristic charm.

The energy gets a clubby boost on the A2 as the title track gets moving along; crisp beats are married to an arpeggiated bassline, slight bleeps and subtle FX sounds wrapping themselves around the main structure of the track to give some warmth to proceedings. As with the opening track, there are quietly placed spoken vocal parts, never firing from the speakers, but just adding a layer of sound to complement the main action. Memories of Axe Corner's 'Tortuga' or C-Concept's 'Why Naked?' sprang to mind, with the track's pulsing early 90s electronic feel, which is no bad thing at all.

The B-side greets us with DIVINE DIVIDER, essentially a track built around punchy drums with a gorgeous crunchy clap sound, a mid-range staccato bassline and the use of FX through the track, adding movement to sections as it glides along. Possibly produced as a sort-of linking type track for being 'in the mix', this doesn't stray from the main sounds throughout, only the FX parts altering the sounds here and there, but this is a fine mid-mix tool for DJs for sure.

Second on this side of 12" is Rzwodzwo's Brain, an extremely quirky electronic jam, with off-kilter beeps and bleeps, swirling radio-interference style FX noises and metallic hits in the percussion, all sat atop a wonderfully woozy bassline, adding some welcome warmth, with all the bleeping and fuzzy high-end sounds whirling around the top. A shiny pad also comes into play at the halfway point, which also adds another layer of joy. A superbly intricate, offbeat and slightly mad, but gorgeous, club track is on offer here, just excellent.

For the final track on the wax, Matt is joined by brother Christian, for their "Datapoppers" track, in the C.S.M.S. guise. A tough but sparse machine funk drum pattern leads into pulsating synth hits and dubby stabs, cowbell hits added for some old-school flavour, with a bassline which is fuzzy around the edges and sounds great as a result. Keeping in theme with Matt's solo outings on the vinyl, this also has echoes of early 90s European house, the likes of which Frank De Wulf would have been proud. Everything is placed perfectly, down to the panned zaps and slight perc rattles - a fantastic end to a wonderfully produced 12".

But that's not all! For those of you who like their music in the form of zeros and ones, as opposed to solid slabs of wax, you get the bonus of Matt's 'SomewhereInSpace', as mentioned earlier. It's a superb addition to the tracks on the 12" too, a slightly acidic bassline rolling and flowing under some sparking synths, tough drums and heady pads. The focus overall here though is the bassline, which mutates as the track works its way into your brain, the opening and closing of the filters creating a huge amount of variation on that one sound throughout the track. An excellent bonus to add to the brilliant vinyl. Quality all the way!

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
