The literature of the war against Ukraine testified to the profound changes that took place in the nature of Ukrainian artistic expression: from the loss of the very ability to speak, through the development of a new poetics of the voice and body, through literalism as the restoration of the connection between the word and reality and the rejection of metaphor in favor of metonymy – to the formation of a new idea of literature. Understood as a sphere of imagination and at the same time as a mechanism of representation, Ukrainian literature has been re-thinking its attitudes around reality and also its use for constructing of the ‘common places’ of anthropological and emotional experience.

She is an author, co-author, and co-editor of eight books on the literary history of modern Ukraine.

Peut-on dire que ses pires craintes se concrétisent aujourd’hui avec cette guerre commencée dès février 2014 et le Coup d’État de Maïdan? 

o	Vous êtes allé à la commémoration du 80e anniversaire de la victoire de Stalingrad en février dernier alors que tous les pays occidentaux l’ont boycotté.
 Quelle est l’importance de Stalingrad dans l’histoire moderne de l’Europe et du Monde? Et comment le Général de Gaulle voyait cette bataille?

o	Selon vous et votre grand-père, l’amitié entre la France et la Russie a une grande histoire et est indispensable à l’équilibre de l’Europe. Pourquoi en est-il ainsi?

o	Il termine avec un message pour le peuple du Québec en rappelant « Vive le Québec libre » du Général de Gaulle à Montréal le 14 juillet 1967.

Ivan Katchanovski teaches at the School of Political Studies & Conflict Studies and Human Rights Program at the University of Ottawa. He was Visiting Scholar at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian at Harvard University. He is the author of "Cleft Countries: Regional Political Divisions and Cultures in Post-Soviet Ukraine and Moldova," and the co-author of "Historical Dictionary of Ukraine." He has written for and/ or appeared on The BBC, CBC, Washington Post, The Guardian and more.

He specializes primarily in politics, conflicts, political violence, and the far right in Ukraine. He teaches at the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa. Katchanovski was Visiting Scholar at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Politics at the State University of New York at Potsdam, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, and Kluge Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. His academic publications include 4 books, 19 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and 12 chapters. His three books on the Russia-Ukraine war and its origins, the Maidan massacre in Ukraine, and modern Ukraine will be published by major Western academic presses.

Anniversary of the Russian invasion - where does Ukraine stand? - Weekly, 19-25 February

The dictionary defines culture as “the way of life for an entire society.” But sometimes larger forces create rifts within the whole, inevitably leading to a confrontation between factions. A prime example of this cultural struggle is playing out today within the cities and villages of Ukraine, the focus of today’s episode.

In this sixth installment of our monthly series, Picturing World Cultures, we speak with Ukrainian photographer and visual artist Maxim Dondyuk, and his wife and artistic manager, Irina.

Our conversation stretches beyond the current conflict, to encompass other aspects of Ukrainian society. From Maxim’s early series on a country doctor’s final visits with patients (which drew inspiration from the work of W. Eugene Smith) to his in-depth coverage of Ukraine’s TB epidemic, we witness the evolution of his working methods and his dedication to long term documentary projects. 

Step behind the scenes of a military camp for children run by Cossacks, and gain insight into the cultural split between pro-Russian and pro-European factions, which Maxim photographed for his book Culture of Confrontation.

As he writes in this book, “One culture tried to cling to old times, old ways of living. They were nostalgic for a past that meant a lot to them, to their parents, and grandparents. Yet there was another culture that felt completely differently. They looked ahead to forging something new, a different country.”

Picturing World Cultures: Maxim Dondyuk - Ukraine

Es war 2014, an seiner „Tschussowaja-Suite“ komponierend, als der Tubist Klaus Burger die GEZ – Gebühren verweigerte. Was passierte auf dem Maidan in Kiew? Durch seine Kulturprojekte im Ural galt sein Interesse dem Osten und er informierte sich breit. Was da im öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk zu sehen und hören war, klaffte in gewaltigem Ausmaß zu den Reportagen auseinander, die im Internet zu finden waren. Aus Gründen der grundgesetzlich verbrieften Gewissensfreiheit stellte er die Zahlungen an den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk ein. Konnte der Musiker Klaus Burger dort guten Gewissens aussteigen? Immerhin liebte er das Radio und hatte eine Vielzahl an Hörspiel- und Dokumentarfilmmusiken komponiert, darunter für einen Film, der den Grimmepreis erhielt und für zwei, die dafür nominiert waren. Alles Aufträge von Sendeanstalten des öffentlich- rechtlichen Rundfunks, und der Grimmepreis machte damals noch stolz. 

Klaus Burger reiste 2016 nach Donezk und hielt Vorträge über zeitgenössische Musik und Spieltechniken für Blechbläser an der Nationalen Musikakademie Donezk. Da dauerte der bewaffnete Konflikt im Donbass-Becken bereits zwei Jahre an. Er führte Tagebuch.
