Part 1 Overview: When DJ Soul Brother # 4 asked me to guest DJ after 20 years of retirement it was both challenging and exciting a to play a set combining the ambience of a Canal Street wine bar and the late life need to reconnect to the lower Manhattan Lo-Fi scene. No longer top heavy with 90’s radio ready singles I had morphed into an archivist of full length albums and special unreleased editions with a preference for soothing sounds and nostalgia.

The first track “Aguacero” was intended to show expansion outside of my usual go to Hip Hop, House or Reggaeton. A Spanish language track that is equally psychedelic and “Lana Del Reyish” (my daughter likes it) that could easily transition into La Lom’s psychedelic cumbia was a deliberate decision to spotlight the guitar chords of the upcoming El Michel’s tracks which bring Wu-tang revitalization sound to the indie generation. All four vinyls are a perfect set up for the T.R.O.Y. reinterpretation that happens with vinyl 5. For later in this instrumental set I also got a chance to really highlight the amazing production of 90’s era Hip Hop which is initially manifested as that East Brooklyn West Indian influenced Beatminerz sound which compliments Soul Brother # 4’s reggae spectrum.  The Hip Hop golden age is further explored through DJ Premier’s gritty street sounds which real heads revere as sacred boom bap. But this establishment is for first dates and wine livers not just B-boys so I’m needing to get those chopped up Primo beats subdued and i pull out secrets weapons that overlay the female vocals of Bahamadia, Janet, and Tintinou over hard cove tracks - instantly making this a 90’s love affair with “baggie jeans and extensions in her hair.”
