I stopped while driving home after performing a new version of Alison where I tried to make the song sound happy, and ended unexpectedly on the chorus to The Other Side. I wanted to record the idea and see how it transitioned into The Other Side//to see how recording with the ipad and iphone at the same time would go, but because that song is kind of emotionally taxing, I just kept going for another hour. Not everything I played ended up on this little EP, and some of the talking segments (apart from where I roll down the windows) are rearranged to insinuate a story. 

If you're listening to Powering Off on it's own, I mean, cool. The bluetooth speaker going off made me laugh and I thought it was a silly fun way to start the EP, although it's silly/funny in a very dark way if you know what Alison is about.

Alison is kind of a dark song, but You Know What You Did (the album) made me want to lean into the power of writing in a major key leading people to think a song was happy/chill. If you're the kind of person who likes digging into people's discographies, it's a rewrite of the 7th song on Songs to Panic on Dramamine To, which itself was a rewrite of a song I wrote in high school. 

Alison (Oh my God)

I wanted to record the idea and see how it transitioned into The Other Side//to see how recording with the ipad and iphone at the same time would go, but because that song is kind of emotionally taxing, I just kept going for another hour. Not everything I played ended up on this little EP, and some of the talking segments (apart from where I roll down the windows) are rearranged to insinuate a story. 

I went a little bit harder on this version than I had on previous unrecorded versions, changing the lyrics as I played through it. The new version, coming 2025 as part of Songs to Panic on Dramamine II, also has new lyrics, but is less folk-punk-in-a-car, and more folk-rock-in-my-apartment. Or, mandolacore. Little known fact--it was originally written in 2021, transposing the verse chords for "when i met you.", "At least I've Got My Cat" down a whole step. I-II-VI-V, the default chord progression for... when mandola music enters a key other than C, Eb, G, Bb, or D.

Responses to the song from Spotify playlisters have conveyed to me their sense that the vocals are "chaotic", but they're just syncopated//the intentionally difficult to understand lyrics could also contribute to that fact. It's not a him. I mean. A hymn. That's like, the key takeaway, unless you're someone who will hear "tree sap circles scream still spinning silent all it is" and know exactly what I'm talking about, in which case, hi, go ahead and skip the Other Side. Unless you already heard it, in which case, okay.

One of the standout tracks from the album, this one is very cutting edge.

Fans of Too Much Time on Their Heads (2012) will remember this song, and possibly note the lack of "breaking a heart or finding a kind of peace." Twelve years later though and it's finally clear that I'm saying, "tragic or lucky", not "tragic or unlucky", the latter is not very Anything and Everything and Nothing and it bothered me because it made the song seem like I was leaning in a particular direction and not just saying "I have zero clue what I want but definitely something...?"

I pretty much just cut the song right before this one when the mandola started going crazy.

I'm referencing the part of "the city that you knew;" where I say "we write poems about ourselves, but we pretend they're about someone else." I cut out someone's name at the end so that people didn't jump to conclusions lol.
