271 years ago, engraver Emmanuel Bowen drafted a map of the future United States highlighting a transitional period between Indigenous communities and European settlements along with familiar geographic features like the Ohio River and the Appalachian Mountains. 

North America in 1754 was in a period of change, with the French and Indian War in the east, and expansion continuing in the west. Many settlers claimed states like present-day Kentucky were uninhabited hunting grounds. However, the Cherokee, Shawnee, and other Native American groups had been living here for thousands of years and were ready to defend it.
