As you may have surmised, there’s often a temptation to sample the menu at Big Ears, often leaving a show in search of greener musical pastures (or a leg up in a queue). I prefer to thwart this urge and commit. But it seemed artists understood the reality, taking it in stride when audiences filed out of a show. There was one funny moment I witnessed, though. Forty minutes into a performance of The Blue Hour, a Top 10 album at NPR Music last year, Shara Nova and the Knoxville Symphony endured a noticeable smattering of departures during a section break. Nova at first said nothing, with a slight grimace. Then, she stage-whispered: Tell Marc Ribot I said hi…

She knew, like the rest of us, that Ribot was about to hit at the Mill & Mine with Los Cubanos Postizos — his loose-limbed Arsenio Rodríguez tribute band, a staple of my first year or so as a New Yorker near the close of the ’90s. I didn’t join the exodus, but I’ll confess that I didn’t stay to the very end of The Blue Hour. Los Cubanos Postizos, featuring the likes of Anthony Coleman on organ and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums, was bringing a party I couldn’t miss. They started out pretty loose, with a prankish energy telegraphed by the fright wigs that Coleman and Ribot soon tossed aside. After an adjustment with the stage monitors, things began to click. By the end of the show, I wasn’t listening critically anymore. Like some sort of low pressure front, the groove had clouded my faculties. There was nothing to do but get swept away.

SoSaLa (whose artist name was Sadato at the time this album was recorded) has released his next retrospective recording; “1994 - Live at CBGB.” This live album follows up on the previous album, “1993,” this time looking back to 1994, a significant year in SoSaLa’s music career. The music was performed live at the legendary punk club CBGB in New York on January 8th, 1994, with SoSaLa’s Tokyo-based quartet, SADATO.

SADATO was a well-known band in the Japanese independent rock and noise music scene, and one of the first and few with a DIY approach to music. Because of this, the song “Life Drunk” was dedicated to Gallon Drunk, and “35 Cent Puppy Sandwich” was dedicated to FUGAZI and their DIY attitude. SADATO fearlessly pioneered New York City underground NO WAVE music to audiences in Tokyo. SADATO’s music was deep, noisy, and angry indie rock, with dada-inspired messages expressed in the lyrics. CBGB’s manager, Louise Parnassy Park, loved their music so much that she invited them to perform twice in the same week.

This retrospective album, recorded and mixed by famed producer and engineer Martin Bisi, is another must-have for fans of SoSaLa’s unique and accomplished music career. The CD is a high-end 24-bit limited edition, with only 100 autographed copies available

New York's 'Nu NO WAVE band SoSaLa is the brainchild of Iranian-American sax player SoSaLa. Fueled by improvisation, SoSaLa blends original melancholic melodies and those of his native Iran with Persian, African, and African-American rhythms. Altogether, Sohrab calls his music "nu world trash". His international background molded his music.
