As Dante wakes up by the water, a beautiful and mysterious flute solo echos in the distance, and as winds and front ensemble build, a trumpet solo takes over, supported by diminished chords in the front ensemble. As Dante travels through this next phase of his journey, wind and percussion sections are featured, ending with an incredibly powerful and rhythmically based climax.

Purgatorio

The rest of the opening production develops with dark melodies and driving tempos, as Dante escapes the underworld at the conclusion of the last impact.

Escape

The beginning of the show echoes the beginning of the poem, with Dante in the woods and the first line of “The Divine Comedy” narrated over an eerie soundscape. Tension grows as a flute solo enters, while winds and percussion layer in, building to a massive dark and intense impact, as Dante approaches the gates of the underworld.

Inferno

As Dante begins his ascent into the heavens, familiar chord progressions are sung by an angelic choir, with the winds layering in, building as Dante approaches the gates of heaven. Trumpets and upper woodwinds have a brilliant and triumphant feature, which builds to a huge impact as Dante walks the final steps of his journey. The battery and front ensemble transition us to our final phrase, a glorious and immense impact, accompanied by church bells and heavenly sounds, as Dante completes his journey.

Paradiso

The dragon appears as a creature of legend in almost every culture. Using incredibly thematic and intense original music, combined with “Taking Flight,” (based on music from the movie “How to Train Your Dragon,”) this show explores these myths and their meaning.

The Awakening

Fast, driving tempos and dark features set the stage as the Dragon’s fire wreaks havoc upon the Earth.

The Dragons fly to their own world as the smoke clears, recapping melodies from throughout the show.

Taking Flight

Opens the show immediately with uptempo, Latin style impact. A trumpet solo progresses, with various sections of the band building and climbing behind the soloist to the second full impact of the show. After a brief, slower tango feel, another segment of layering begins, adding a huge accelerando to the end of the opener with ample general effect.

Fuego Latino

Begins with a percussion feature and a recapitulation of the original theme. The final movement is full of high GE full band impacts, mini percussion features and an ending that will allow your band to leave a strong statement on the field long after they’ve trooped the stands!

Fuego Latino Dos

Starts out with a slow, dynamically sensitive feel featuring an alto saxophone solo. The tempo moves to a slow tango featuring a small group with tenor saxophone lead, which develops through the full band. The song immediately takes off into a bright mambo feel, featuring high energy breaks, wind features and rhythm that is sure to get the crowd on their feet!

Nightlife Tango

“Home of the Brave” is a modern, drum corps style twist to the patriotic music we all know and love. This show is sure to give goosebumps to every member of the performing ensemble, and audience!

Scenes from the City chronicles a day in the Big Apple beginning with a bustling morning traffic rush which then moves into a calm afternoon in Central Park, and culminates with the excitement of a night on the town - all delivered in a vintage big-band-era style that evokes the romantic feelings of a time in memoriam. Featuring the music of Billy Joel, George Gershwin, and Leonard Bernstein, yourstudents are sure to have a great time romping through the city with this show!

Majesty explores the pomp and circumstance of a royal court. Featuring music from Handel, Saint-Sanes, Lorde, and Sia, the show offers a variety of moods and textures to present the regalness and complexity of a monarchy.  Written for a band of 40 winds, the show allows for a group of this size to experience the grandeur of an ancient throne and court and present a show with a ton of audience appeal.

Alex Thode (he/him) would first like you to know that not only is the “e” at the end of his last name not silent, but that he is also a composer and arranger most known for his work in the pageantry arts. He resides in Waukesha, Wisconsin with his cat, Buzz. An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Alex composes and arranges for marching bands across the continental United States.

Alex's clientele have been Bands of America (BOA) Regional Champions and Finalists, UIL State Finalists and Area Champions, and WGI Winds World Champions, with Finalists in every classification. He has also had the privilege of having his arrangements performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Tournament of Roses Bandfest.

In addition to his compositions and arrangements for the pageantry arts, Alex also composes symphonic band and chamber percussion works.

In his free time, Alex enjoys watching movies and believing he’s a professional film critic, hiking and pretending that he’s athletic, traveling to National Parks — of which he’d eventually like to visit all — and acting like he’s Marco Polo, playing piano, guitar and a variety of kalimbas, and being with good company.
