In the Ancient World the seven most beautiful monuments were called 'The seven Wonders of the World'. In his Symphony nr.1, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World' the young Dutch composer Alex Poelman has made a musical portrait of these splendid human realizations which are now, but for one, all destroyed. The symphony is masterly and lavishly orchestrated and portrays both the power of the sovereigns of ancient times and the splendour of the most beautiful buildings and works of art they have had built. Moreover, neither the seducing Eastern charm nor the mysterious exotic atmosphere are failing.

Alex Poelman (Arnhem, 1981) studied informatics at the Twente University and plays French horn in several top amateur bands. Under the guidance of David Rowland he wrote his first composition for wind band 'Volcano'. This was followed by 'Theseus', 'Symphony nr. 1 'The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World', 'D-Day' and 'Aquila Chrysaetos'. This symphony was premiered on 28 May 2004 at Enschede. One year later, it was recorded on CD by the new Dutch military band KMKJWF conducted by Norbert Nozy.

V. THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON: Babylon, a city on the banks of the river Euphrates in ancient Mesopotamia was flourishing under the reign of King Nabuchodonosor II (6th century B.C.) The Greek historian Herodotus (ca 484-425 B.C.) described the splendour and luxury of this city with, among others, the famous Ishtar Gate and the fabulous “hanging gardens” often attributed to Semiramis, the legendary queen of Assyria and Babylon.

VI. THE LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA: The isle of Pharos, near the Egyptian city of Alexandria on the Nile delta, was linked to the continent by a 13000 m long mole in 285 B.C. Sostrates of Knidos built a 180 m high white marble tower on it. On top of the tower two fires were kept burning at night, in order to guide the ships. It was destroyed by an earth quake in 1302.

VII. THE COLOSSUS OF RHODOS: In the 3rd century B.C. the seaport town of Rhodos on the Greek island of the same name was very flourishing. In order to commemorate a victory against Demetrios Piorcetos, a huge bronze statue of the sun god Helios was erected in the harbour in 280 B.C. The statue, made by the sculptor Khares, was 35 m high and the ships had to pass between the statue’s legs to enter or leave the harbour. The colossus was destroyed by an earth quake in 224 B.C.

With this beautiful original symphony, Alex Poelman has, no doubt, enriched the better concert repertoire for symphonic band.

'Symphonieën der Nederlanden' is a piece in one movement for wind band. It contains seven subdivisions, each of them treating a different musical theme. But the unifying idea is hard work, the same kind of hard work as dragging a plough through the flat Dutch polder fields. Heavy work, and always the same. Sometimes a bit of relaxation, like the charleston at the end, but we keep our clogs on. It's a serious piece.

Major Albert Fasce, head of the musical department of the French Army, wrote about Poème du Feu: The Poème du Feu by Madame Ida Gotkovski is probably one of the original compostitions for symphonic band which has been most successful in recent years. I have had to conduct this work at concerts with different orchestras, and in particular at Budapest, and each performance was greeted by enthusiastic ovations. Moreover, it is quite rare in contemporary music to achieve, at the same time, the satisfaction of the musicians and success with the public. This is significant. This magnificent work is written remakably for wind instruments. There is no major technical difficulty, but the character of this work calls for meticulous placing and a certain orchestral glow. There is a “key” to be found in the first movement, which is in some way the rhythmic genesis of the work. The metronome marking of the first movement should be absolutely respected, and proper interpretation of the accents and the articulations are imperative. The fortissimi and rallentandi should not be exaggerated. As far as the little “trick” is concerned, this lies in the execution of the double crochets which should be considered in two ways: the first, a rhythmical one for those which arise from the rhythmic genesis, and the second more melodic for those arising in passages. Finally, to unseal the rhythmic origin of the double crochets, it is necessary to proceed by recurrence, starting from the four double crochets of the finale. These four double crochets must be executed very rhythmically in the different times. For the first, they arise: 1: from the second bar of the first movement 2: from the bar three bars before A for the second 3: from the bar from G to the fourth time for the third. These double crochets must be played rhythmcally, while diminishing, however, those three bars before A. All this is of great importance, otherwise the whole execution will be in contradition with the spirit and the rhythmic inspiration of the work. Moreover, this beautiful work could very well support a ballet. As Head of Broadcast Music I must express all our gratitude to Madame Gotkovski for her contribution to constituting a real repertoire for wind ensemble. This articular and sometimes unappreceated band possesses unsuspected riches. This magnificent work is now in the repertoire of Musique de l‘Air de France.

Sakura
This work was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Tokyo in celebration of its 70th anniversary in 1994. However, in view of the invitation by WASBE (World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) for its Wind Orchestra to perform at the 7th annual convention of this association, to be held in Hamamatsu, Japan, in the summer of 1995, it was decided to premiere the music at that time instead of the anniversary year itself. The symphony is in three movements, with an introduction marked 'Moderately and sustained' leading to the first movement proper, a driving 'Allegro assai' whose main thematic material is first heard in the timpani and mallet percussion. The second movement, from which the symphony drives its sub-title, is an extended treatment of one of the oldest and most beloved Japanese folk songs 'Sakura' ('Cherry Blossoms'), a long-breathed elegiac melody taken as the basis for a free variation development through all the individual sections of the orchestra. The third movement is a brilliant rondo form (Allegro Molto, con fuoco) in which some elements of the preceding two movements are incorporated to bring the entire work to a breath-taking conclusion in a final burst of virtuoso performance from every instrument in the ensemble. The 'Fifth Symphony (Sakura)' was first performed on July 26th 1995, by the Senzoku Gakuen Symphonic Wind Orchestra under the direction of the composer, at the 7th WASBE Conference in Hamamatsu, Japan.

Halewijn
Symphonic Poem - Revised version
The medieval song ´Halewijn´ tells the fascinating story about a murderer of women who is finally killed himself. This subject is set to music by Gerard Boedijn in his symphonic poem ' Halewijn '. This work, with a very programmatic character, was considered as one of the highlights in his oeuvre by Boedijn. Molenaar Edition offers, more than seventy years after the appearance of the composition, a completely revised version by Eric Swiggers.

En Ecoutant Paris
A man is strolling in Paris and muses about the capital's prestigious history, suggested by a slow waltz. He is disturbed by the surrounding noise, but anyhow the musical evocation proves to be stronger. It is much easier to cross the road when you follow a nice woman. He reaches the quaysides of the river Seine, where an accordionist is playing. The dialogue between the accordionist and the band fascinates the man and he starts to whistle the same tune. But then again there is the hell of the busy streets with the hectic traffic; the man hesitates, crosses in a hurry and some cars narrowly miss him. Finally he finds refuge in the “Quartier des Halles” district. The window shops of the antique dealers display all kinds of obsolete objects. The walk comes to and end and our man takes a last quick glance at the river Seine and goes back home, listening to Paris, a city he has fallen in love with.

Symphonie de Paris
This composition, written in 1973, was commissioned by the French Ministry of Cultural Affairs and is dedicated to Désiré Dondeyne who premiered it with the 'Musique des Gardiens de la Paix' at the Paris ‘Palais des Congrès' on 27 February 1975. The piece was recorded in 1994 by the 'Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Police Nationale' (National Police Band) conducted by Pierre Bigot. Serge Lancen included the following text with the score: 'The Symphonie de Paris is a musical walk through the capital. Once the visitor has arrived, the composition evokes successively: the familiar cheerfulness of the popular quarters, the hustle and bustle of the great boulevards, the mysterious elegance of the Champs Elysées, the poetic charm of the banks of the river Seine, the impressive Notre-Dame cathedral looking in the mirror of the Seine. Then we have the 'Rive Gauche' (Left bank): the young and dynamic ‘Latin Quarter', 'Saint-Germain-des-Prés' an ideal place to stroll. The walk ends near the Eiffel Tower and during the ascension we really discover Paris with its monuments, its avenues, the meanders of the Seine. Finally we enjoy the unique sight of the entire city perspective.'

The German composer and arranger Manfred Schneider has been playing for many years with the military band Heeresmusikkorps 300 at Cologne. In the meantime he got a reputation as composer of light symphonic music for concert band in Germany and abroad. In the Molenaar Edition catalogue you find already several of his compositions, such as Upside Down, Song of Freedom, the rhythmical study Rock and Go and the most popular Rock Symphonie. Schneider is well at ease in today's musical styles and this time he was inspired by jazz music. The three-part Jazz Suite starts with a nice jazz waltz; the more quiet second part is a fine jazz ballad, whereas the final part is an exuberant jazz samba. A com-plete percussion section and a piano will provide the typical jazz spirit.

Who, or should it be said, what is X28 Project? The moniker has changed with the minds of the holding proprietors so many times throughout the years that the meaning is quite obscured. As of now, the mystery is magnified by the control of the ensuing days to which the existence is dependent. Once known as a conduit for progression, while still maintaining that philosophy, the humble resonance now seems to be an afterthought of something under the bored need for an exit. It should be noted that as of now the control prevails mainly within one governing entity. By the determination to construct, since 2006 there has been a steady release of instrumentation designed to combat the silence that once was harbored in the preceding minds. Intentions only to reverberate within one location and within one moment. This was unacceptable to the new direction that was necessary for the formulation of continuous angles of relief. Each outlet created has led to more tears of the consistency of that which is disenchanted. Disinterest seems to be molded in the wasted time. While unconcerned for plenty, there is a compulsion for furthering and augmenting the embrace. Inquiry is challenged day to day, yet it's something overwhelmingly vital. The delight in continuance should be cherished in the face of persistent lethargy. To this extent, the ensemble is present to absolve the anguish that is intimate to reasoning...
