Maundy Thursday: Passover, Eucharist, & Service

The story of Jesus watching his disciples' feet and commanding them to love one another as he has loved them is far too easy to sentimentalize if that's all we read... if we skip over the part of the story left out of the lectionary reading where Jesus confronts Judas with his imminent betrayal and evil takes hold of Judas... and if we stop reading before we get to Peter's claim of faithfulness in the face of Jesus' prediction of denial. But Jesus' command to love isn't about sentiment. It's about the need for community in which we commit to love each other specifically because we will all sometimes need people to love us when we don't deserve it. And when we learn how to love and be loved that way, that is when we become Christ's beloved community.

This evening, we remember the night Jesus share the Passover meal with his disciples, washed their feet, and centered their lives and moments in love.  As they journey to the cross, and as we journey throughout our lives, this love carries us all.

The Hand of the Lord That Serves and Feeds Us

On Maundy Thursday Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, giving them an example of service. He eats the Passover meal with them and shares His own Supper with them, a Supper we still partake of today.  He prays in the Garden of Gethsemane that God's will would be done, knowing full well that it meant His death.  And He loved His people until the end.  That ending comes on Good Friday as He says, "it is finished."  What began with the Palm Sunday entrance begins to build on Maundy Thursday.
