After our short hiatus, we're back with a brand new episode, the first of our two part Ephemera investigation into that pit of Cold War bigotry and paranoia, My Son John. With a name like that, you know who we had to bring on. That's right, John Cassaro, AKA Journeyman John Baker, who just so happens to be someone's actual son, is back and ready to get depressed.

Though honestly, he's not that depressed. Did you know that this episode is the very first time John hasn't been forced to watch a film starring Red Skelton? It's true. The movie is still not good though.

But please, join us on our journey through Leo McCarey's wild career, its high highs, including a long digression into his work with Laurel and Hardy, and its low lows, like almost getting killed by a milk based publicity stunt or this movie. Welcome back for our exciting conclusion to our two part Ephemera episode on the morally execrable 1951 film My Son John. This week, we welcome back our guest John Cassaro, or Journeyman John Baker, who was forced at gunpoint to watch this movie.

So, let's get real, folks, this one made us a little sad. However, the film is a fascinating document of a poisoned mind, and as such, it becomes very interesting to talk about. There are many parts of My Son John that seem literally ripped from a modern Facebook page, often phrased almost word for word the same. There's fears about communism, of course. There's also a lot about the separation of church and state, fears about immigrants and a whole heaping helping of queer panic. 

This one's a party, what can I say. So come for our trawl through the American id and stay for our deconstruction of possibly the most evil character ever created, the father, played by Dean Jagger.

Ephemera 12.2: My Son John (with John Cassaro)

We're back, and this time we're animated! Well, more animated than usual. We're at a generous 4. But, this week on Ephemera, we are talking about a fascinating film, 1949's maliciously suppressed Alice In Wonderland. We go long on the career of the main creative force behind this version of Alice, Lou Bunin, and try to grapple with his work.

To do all that, I brought on our return guest, Matthew Morris, find his work @thesnakespaw. He's a dab hand at stop motion animation, so we brought on a bit of an expert this week. Together we'll learn about  the 1930s leftist puppet scene, how much petroleum can you swallow to make a buck, and, in a late turn of events, what that Peter Dinklage Cyrano De Bergerac was all about.

When one of these jobs ends with dock worker Joey Doyle thrown to his death before he was due to testify to corruption within the union, Terry begins to question and doubt his involvement. A burgeoning romance with Joey's sister Edie gradually awakens Terry's conscience, throwing him into conflict with everything that he has ever known.
