Highlights From Hebrews Pt.2 “How Shall We Escape?”
This past week we saw that the Book of Hebrews was written during a very narrow window of time between the death of Paul and the destruction of Jerusalem. Sometime after the death of Paul and the burning of Rome by Nero in 64AD, Christians, and Jews became the target of Roman persecution. It was during this time that many Jews who had professed faith in Jesus began to reconsider, and many were at the point of apostasy. These early followers were faced with an untold number of hardships, and this became the source of their discouragement and change of heart toward Christ. It was for the purpose of changing this attitude that the Book of Hebrews was written. As we saw last week the first thing the writer did to call the people back to faith was to urge them to remember who Jesus was! As the writer said, Jesus was not just a prophet but one who proceeded from the bosom of the Father and coming from the bosom of the Father made Him one with Him. Therefore, all the Father was, so was the Son. He reminded them He was greater than the angels for the angels worship Him and that He came to die for our sins and then sat at the right hand of the Father, awaiting a Kingdom that He would rule without end. The point was well taken, anytime our faith begins to falter the first thing we must do is remind ourselves just who Jesus is!
