Described as “the trend to end all trends,” #corecore was a paradoxical TikTok hashtag that briefly garnered mainstream attention at the beginning of the year. Just what did its chaotic, nonsensical, and melancholic output tell us about our relationship with contemporary online culture?

The first instalment of a brand new audio-essay of Kodwo Eshun’s 1998 book ‘More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction’. Much sought after since it’s initial publication, ‘More Brilliant’ was a concerted attempt to change the relationship between writing and music. 

Throughout the work, which is situated between electronic music history, media theory, science fiction and Afrodiasporic studies, Eshun constructs an alternative (non-linear) timeline of 20th century music, traversing jazz, dub, techno, funk, hip-hop and jungle. 

The text mobilises what Eshun sees as the theoretical tendencies inherent to the output of artists such as Sun Ra, Lee Perry, Ramellzee, Funkadelic, 4hero and The Jungle Brothers, and open the possibilities of sonic fiction: the hitherto unexplored intersections between science fiction and organised sound.

In this bumper Trip, the gang survey the totalising modern phenomenon that is The Internet. Nadia, Keir and Jem dredge up their early interactions with a primitive web and explain how the dream of free and open communication was displaced by closed networks of e-commerce and data harvesting.

Following Keir’s recent Microdose episode with Malcolm Harris, they discuss the connections between self-optimising techies and the pseudo-science of eugenics.

They also talk about digital hygiene, the “Californian ideology”, why the Soviets didn’t invent the internet, and whether psychedelic drugs were the driver of Silicon Valley’s dominance.

The Girlstack w/ theorist Alex Quicho (NM74)

A conversation with cultural theorist Alex Quicho. Building on the ideas of Tiqqun’s 1999 anti-neoliberal treatise Preliminary Materials for a Theory of the Young-Girl, Andrea Long Chu’s Females and Bogna Konior’s work on the girl and the inhuman vis-a-vis the machinic, Quicho has developed a concept she calls the “Girlstack,” which, to borrow her words, models the “ultrasmooth, cybergothic, and angelic dimensions of the girl’s natural habitat.” Quicho talks with us about it here.

[To be clear… we’re speaking of not actual girls or the experience of lived girlhood, but a socially constructed ideation of the girl . . . girl as a vehicle for selling a product, girl as a tool for manipulating entrenched power, girl as living currency, girl as desiring machine.]

Two of the foremost scholars working in the field of media and migration studies today, they spoke about their recently published books, Asians on Demand: Mediating Race in Video Art and Activism and Border Tunnels: A Media Theory of the US-Mexico Underground.

Feng-Mei Heberer’s Asians on Demand: Mediating Race in Video Art and Activism aims to investigate the relations between representation and racial justice through an engagement with an archive of queer, feminist activist videos by Asian filmmakers situated in Germany, Taiwan, United States and Spain. Analyzing video texts by Hito Steyerl, Ming Wong, Miko Cevereza, Kristina Wong’s performance art, experimental video diaries by migrant workers and documentaries by Taiwan International Workers Association, the book provides a critique of neoliberalism’s demand of accessible visibility of Asians, situating it within digital video’s position as exemplary on demand technology.

Juan Llamas-Rodriguez’s Border Tunnels: A Media theory of the US-Mexico Underground analyzes a range of media and technologies, including cable news, reality television, video games and speculative design to uncover their implicit positions on the geopolitics of the US-Mexico border. Taking the tunnels between US and Mexico as a medium for thinking infrastructurally of the border, the book engages with media texts, industrial and technological practices to examine the underlying logics of racialization and securitization of the borderlands and the physical and conceptual affordances provided by tunnels to understand a world of borders.

Bios:
Juan Llamas-Rodriguez is Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on media cultures, digital technologies, border studies, infrastructure studies and Latin American media. His work has appeared in the journals Social Text, Feminist Media Histories, Television & New Media, Lateral, Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience, Popular Communication and the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, as well as several edited collections. He is a member of the Global Internet TV Consortium, a network of media scholars studying internet-distributed screen content, and co-lead of The Migrant Steps Project, a public humanities initiative that prompts walking reflections through engagement with curated narratives about migration.

Feng-Mei Heberer is Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies at New York University. Her research focuses on questions of labor, transnational migration, Asian diaspora, at the confluence of queer studies, feminist studies and critical area studies. Her work has appeared in Sexualities, Camera Obscura, The Autobiographical Turn in German Documentary and Experimental Film, and Asian Video Cultures, among others.

Tunnel Visions And Video Activisms with Feng - Mei Heberer And Juan Llamas - Rodriguez

This event was the launch Zoe Hurley's new book 'Social Media Influencing in the City of Likes: Dubai and the Postdigital Condition'.

Evaluating the cases of multiple influencers, from local to transnational content creators, Hurley reveals how residents, non-citizens and migrant workers survive as influencers in the city of ‘likes.’ Providing de-Westernising perspectives of Dubai’s social media influencing industry within the broader context of global platform capitalism, the book offers an important contribution to the field of social media through illustrating visible economies in a city circuited by social media influencing.

Zoe Hurley is a Visiting Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre and Assistant Professor in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Zayed University, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Her research focuses on postdigital cultures, feminist-semiotics and social media in the Arabian Gulf. She has published articles in leading academic journals, including Feminist Media Studies, Visual Communication, New Media + Society, Social Media & Society, Information Communication & Society, Postdigital Science and Education. Her monograph, 'Social Media Influencing in the City of Likes: Dubai and the Postdigital Condition', advances decolonial semiotic theorising.

Sarah Hopkyns is an Assistant Professor/Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, UK. She has previously worked in higher education in the United Arab Emirates, Canada, and Japan. Her research interests include world Englishes, language and identity, language policy, translingual practice, linguistic ethnography, linguistic landscapes and English-medium instruction (EMI).

Polly Withers is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre, where she leads the project “Neoliberal Visions: Gendering Consumer Culture and its Resistances in the Levant”. Polly’s interdisciplinary work questions and explores how gender, sexuality, race, and class intersect in popular culture and commercial media in the global south.

What if, in a time of infinity content, a meta-reading of the shape and feel of content has become a survival skill?

What if we thought about generative AI more as an expression of an epochal shift in human communication than a root cause?

More than transmitting specific information, “content”—whether a mukbang video or this 3600 word essay—is now foremost a conductor of “vibes.”

Text written with a typewriter is not the same as text written by hand, composed on a computer, sent in a text message, or generated by artificial intelligence. Like all media, the typewriter does not just transmit what a person wants to write. It is its own particular medium. In the 20th century, it changed the way writers write and the way people read—profoundly altering warfare, commerce, literature, and, perhaps most dramatically, gender relations.

How does media actually work in 2024, which is to say in a time of omnipresent AI? And what kind of subject is this era of media producing? On this ep, we speak with K Allado-McDowell—the author, with GPT-3, of Pharmako-AI, Amor Cringe, and Air Age Blueprint, and founder of the Artists + Machine Intelligence program at Google AI—about how media is evolving. Specifically, we ask about rise of “neural media,” which K has theorized as developing out of network media in the mid-2010s amid increasing human-AI interaction. Hearing K describe neural media's mechanics, it seems inevitable that our ideas of individuality and identity formation, even what it means to communicate as a human (among other living beings) are about to be majorly recalibrated.

With today’s so-called generative artificial intelligence, we’re being told that we have finally arrived. We’re now beginning to build true “thinking machines,” machines that will do everything a human can do, only better, faster, and more efficiently. This will change every aspect of our lives, for good…or for bad. Either way, there’s no turning back. We can’t stop generative AI. Only learn to live with it.

This is not true. Today’s machines are far more powerful than those in the past, but their so-called “intelligence” is not like yours or mine.

The belief that they can or soon will become "intelligent" is a myth being used to obscure what so-called generative AI actually is, how it works, and what the companies behind it are really up to. AI companies are using the hype around artificial intelligence to build computer infrastructure, rewrite laws, and alter norms that will fundamentally change how we work, recreate, communicate…And ultimately, how we think about what it means to be human.

None of this is inevitable. The changes being brought on by so-called generative artificial intelligence are not the result of some forward march of technological progress, but instead of decisions and values that we all have a say in.
