In some parts of the world, traditional herbal remedies are the norm.  When we  think of natural remedies we tend to think of older generations living in remote areas, in far away  countries,  with little access to modern healthcare.  We rarely think about the ancient medicinal plants that might exist in our very own cities. On today's episode we look at plant and herb medicines through the lens of Michele Elizabeth. After the family doctor prescribed nothing for one-year-old Norma's sty on her eye, her granny ordered the family out to a glen to gather garlic.
Back home, a leaf was ground up into a paste and applied to the eye, and in the morning there was not a trace of the sty at all...

Removing a sty with garlic

In our May episode of Kamalaya ‘Wellness for Life’ podcast, we talk about medicinal plants and what they are good for. Karina Stewart, Chief Wellness Officer and Founder of Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary on Koh Samui, Thailand talks to Professor Gerard Bodeker, a public health researcher and academic specialising in lifespan wellness and integrative healthcare. Gerry has been engaged in traditional medicinal plant research for more than three decades, he is a Fellow of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and has served as Editor in Chief of the World Health Organization Global Atlas on Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

As long as humans have been around, we’ve relied on plants for our survival: as food, fuel, shelter, medicine — and to produce the oxygen we breathe. Ethnobotanists are scientists who study and catalog these complex interactions between people and plants. Yet ethnobotany has a complicated history of its own, with roots in European colonial expeditions and in the exploitation of Indigenous communities.

Now, with the biodiversity crisis imperiling plants, ethnobotanists have become unexpected advocates for Indigenous knowledge rights in the quest to conserve useful plants around the world and the cultures that rely on them. Modern ethnobotanists are striving to work in partnership with their study communities to preserve much more than just plants: Languages, livelihoods and a wealth of knowledge are at stake.

The evolution of ethnobotany
